And what\u2019s lurking behind biological renderings and advertisements? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limon-art.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jason Limon<\/a> imagines a playful world in which vintage illustrations are the colorful veneer concealing a vast, three-dimensional universe populated by skeletons.<\/p>\n<p>The San Antonio-based artist has long painted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/tags\/jason-limon\/\">otherworldly scenes<\/a> dominated by life after death, when bony figures are stripped of their identities and instead function as anonymous entities. Tapping into emotion and personal experience, Limon continues to conjure the uncanny through a cheeky approach to one of the most universal symbols.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/limon-8.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-475907\" title=\"\u201cMatchbook Tiger,\u201d 12 x 9 inches\" data-rl_title=\"\u201cMatchbook Tiger,\u201d 12 x 9 inches\" data-rl_caption=\"\u201cMatchbook Tiger,\u201d 12 x 9 inches\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/limon-8.jpg\" alt=\"a trompe leoil painting by Jason Limon of a torn illustration of a tiger revealing a skeleton\" class=\"wp-image-475915\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cMatchbook Tiger,\u201d 12 x 9 inches<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his most recent works blending acrylic and oil paints, the artist homes in on illusion, opting for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/tags\/trompe-loeil\/\">trompe-l\u2019\u0153il<\/a> technique. Many feature a torn element, as if paper has been ripped away to reveal an otherwise invisible world beneath. While Limon incorporated this effect in previous works, it\u2019s propelled his practice as of late because it offers more space for experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took a bit to press the brakes on how I work, but I intentionally decided to slow the pace of how I create the art while also trying to keep a little bit of playfulness,\u201d he says. \u201cAs I play with painting in the background, it has taught me to loosen up in a variety of ways.
