The song previously peaked at No. 2 back in 1995.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFans and players adopted the song after their opening match against Croatia. The in-stadium DJ dropped the song following a 4-2 win, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and the players joining in with a singalong with the fans who had crossed the Atlantic to support them. Subsequently, the moment was recreated after every match, with Kane saying that the rendition in Mexico City\u2019s Azteca Stadium after their epic 3-2 win over the hosts was one of \u201cthe greatest moments in an England shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOasis frontman Liam Gallagher endorsed the cause, writing on <em>X<\/em> that \u201cIt\u2019s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon [sic] ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.\u201d Brother Noel, who wrote the song, said that \u201c\u2018Wonderwall\u2019 belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat has now translated into an uptick in streams and sales, too. In a midweek sales flash, the Official Charts Company says that the song is up to No. 2 on the Official Singles Chart, having already leapt 21 places week-on-week in the final tally dated July 10 from No. 32 to No. 8. The song peaked at No. 2 on Spotify\u2019s Top 50 \u2013 Global charts and, as of Wednesday, was at No. 3 on the U.K. version. <em>Music Week<\/em> reports that the song has sales of 19,210 across streaming and downloads so far this week, trailing only \u201cRein Me In,\u201d Sam Fender and Olivia Dean\u2019s record-breaking chart-topper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEven if the streaming drop-off is steep following the team\u2019s exit, the song will have built a solid base in this week\u2019s tally, which runs on a weekly basis from Fridays. We have just hours to wait to find out if it achieves the feat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt would be a long overdue No. 1 for the Oasis brothers \u2014 and their ninth overall, following \u201cSome Might Say\u201d (1995), \u201cDon\u2019t Look Back In Anger\u201d (1996), \u201cD\u2019Know What I Mean\u201d (1997), \u201cAll Around The World\u201d (1998), \u201cGo Let It Out\u201d (2000), \u201cThe Hindu Times\u201d (2002), \u201cLyla\u201d (2005) and \u201cThe Importance of Being Idle\u201d (2005).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWonderwall\u201d was the third single issued in the U.K. from their sophomore album <em>(What\u2019s The Story) Morning Glory<\/em>? following \u201cSome Might Say\u201d and \u201cRoll With It.\u201d The latter was involved in an infamous and ill-tempered chart showdown with rivals Blur, dubbed \u2018The Battle of Britpop\u2019 by music magazine <em>NME<\/em>. Blur\u2019s \u201cCountry House\u201d eventually won out by 50,000 copies; neither are considered anywhere close to the respective bands\u2019 finest material. (\u201cMorning Glory\u201d was issued as a single in Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and at radio in North America.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWere a pub quiz to ask contestants to name any of Oasis\u2019 No. 1 singles, \u201cWonderwall\u201d would surely be scribbled down by most, and for good reason. The song currently sits at 2.8 billion streams on Spotify, twice the amount of its closest competitor (\u201cDon\u2019t Look Back In Anger\u201d) and in 2024, it was named the band\u2019s best-selling song in the U.K. The track was an instant global hit, also peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 \u2013 the group\u2019s highest position on the chart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut which music titan kept the Gallagher brothers off the top of the chart? Robson &amp; Jerome, of course. The pop duo, made up of English actors Robson Greene and Jerome Flynn, held the top spot for three weeks, with double A-side \u201cI Believe\u201d \/ \u201cUp On the Roof\u201d keeping the band from No. 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was the pair\u2019s second chart-topper, following another double A-side with a pair of covers, of the Righteous Brothers-popularized \u201cUnchained Melody\u201d and the Vera Lynn-immortalized \u201cWhite Cliffs of Dover\u201d \u2014 issued as a single after the duo\u2019s rendition of \u201cMelody\u201d appeared in TV drama <em>Soldier Soldier<\/em>. The latter was the best-selling single in the U.K. in 1995 and their self-titled studio album also topped the year-end charts. (The \u201cMelody\u201d\/\u201dDover\u201d Double-A also held another one of the other most iconic Britpop singles, Pulp\u2019s \u201cCommon People,\u201d at No. 2.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWonderwall,\u201d however, has endured better than those Robson &amp; Jerome hits; even Robson &amp; Jerome themselves would be unable to argue with that. Following Oasis\u2019 reunion announcement in 2024, the song spiked to No. 17 and, to date, it has spent 106 weeks on the chart (their 1994 single \u201cWhatever\u201d has spent 113, and peaked at No. 3). When the band began its Live 25 tour, a live version of \u201cWonderwall\u201d from their Dublin show was issued as a streaming-only single.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut England\u2019s defeat on Wednesday may have scuppered the band\u2019s No. 1 ambitions; most fans, surely, will spend Thursday staring off into the middle distance in complete silence, contemplating what might have been. \u201cWonderwall\u201d also needs to take down a big beast to get to the top spot in \u201cRein Me In,\u201d which is in its 16th non-consecutive week at No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart \u2014 the longest-ever run on top for a British act, and tied for second on the all-time rankings with Bryan Adams\u2019 \u201c(Everything I Do) I Do It For You.\u201d Frankie Laine\u2019s version of \u201cI Believe\u201d \u2014\u00a0not Robson &amp; Jerome\u2019s\u00a0\u2014 is the all-time leader, at 18 weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCan its previous hype propel it to the top spot? Will England\u2019s World Cup heartache ever come to an end? Definitely. Maybe.
