Throughout his career, though, he also embarked on numerous personal documentary projects like <em>Liverpool: Looking Out to Sea, <\/em>which he completed in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the city experienced sharp economic decline\u2014its historic docks were no longer viable for global industry. He was also president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Magnum Photos<\/a> twice.<\/p>\n<p>One of Marlow\u2019s more meditative projects revolved around 42 Anglican cathedrals across England. The Anglican Christian tradition stems from the establishment of the Church of England following the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_Reformation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English Reformation<\/a> in the 16th century, although the cathedrals\u2019 architectural lineage usually predates this period. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/marlow-6.jpg\" class=\"swipebox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-475878\" title=\"Worcester Cathedral (2010)\" data-rl_title=\"Worcester Cathedral (2010)\" data-rl_caption=\"Worcester Cathedral (2010)\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/marlow-6.jpg\" alt=\"a photograph of the nave of a cathedral in natural light\" class=\"wp-image-475882\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Worcester Cathedral (2010)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Completing <em>The English Cathedral<\/em> involved coordinating visits at times of day when Marlow could experience the buildings in natural light, not unlike the way they were seen for centuries before the advent of electricity. He focused on the churches\u2019 naves, illuminating their rosette-covered wooden ceilings, Gothic arches, altars, and hints of apses beyond.<\/p>\n<p>An exhibition of <em>The English Cathedral<\/em> opens on July 21 and continues through August 31 at <a href=\"https:\/\/cathedral.southwark.anglican.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southwark Cathedral<\/a>, which has roots dating back at least to the 11th century. Today, it\u2019s the oldest Gothic church in London.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/marlow-3.jpg\"
