Leeds boss Melvin Benn has spoken about the lessons learned from the Kanye West controversy surrounding his axed Wireless shows.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: Reading &amp; Leeds boss talks biggest-ever arena overhaul and \u201cstrength of UK and Irish music\u201d on line-up: \u201cWe\u2019re buzzing with ideas for the future\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rapper was to due headline the festival, which was also cancelled, for three nights last weekend.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But they were all pulled after West was blocked from travelling to the UK by the government within a week of the initial announcement.<\/p>\n<p>The booking prompted widespread criticism, including from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who said at the time it is \u201cdeeply concerning that Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A series of festival sponsors also cut their ties with Wireless as a result, including Pepsi, drinks giant Diageo,\u00a0PayPal and Rockstar Energy, piling enormous pressure on the festival to take action.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DW1PelciHql\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>View this post on Instagram<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ahead of the concerts being cancelled, Benn issued a lengthy statement describing West\u2019s past antisemitic remarks as \u201cabhorrent\u201d, but called on people to \u201coffer some forgiveness\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad1 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"taboola-mid-article-title\">Recommended<\/h5>\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking about the cancellation now in a new interview with <em>NME<\/em>, when asked what lessons have been learned, he said: \u201cTiming, I think, is an important lesson. I would hope that other people learn the lesson of forgiveness, because forgiveness is an important part of being a decent human being, in my view. So I do think that is a lesson, but that\u2019s not my lesson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think timing is an important one, but Wireless will return. We\u2019re very confident about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West initially addressed his past antisemtic comments directly in his <em>Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>\u201cto those I\u2019ve hurt\u201d letter, which he originally shared in January, saying he \u201clost touch with reality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple Jewish groups responded to West\u2019s offer to meet and discuss his history of antisemitic comments, but still said he should not play at Wireless Festival.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He then shared a fresh apology following the controversy around his booking at Wireless which was later cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Following the cancellation, a spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism backed the government\u2019s decision to block the rapper from entering the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government has clearly made the right decision here. For once, when it said that antisemitism has no place in the UK, it backed up its words with action,\u201d they added at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone who has boasted of making tens of millions of dollars from selling swastika t-shirts and who released a song called \u2018Heil Hitler\u2019 just months ago clearly would not be conducive to the public good in the UK. Wireless Festival, in its desperate quest for profit, defended the invitation until the end. future\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rapper was to due headline the festival, which was also cancelled, for three nights last weekend.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But they were all pulled after West was blocked from travelling to the UK by the government within a week of the initial announcement.<\/p>\n<p>The booking prompted widespread criticism, including from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who said at the time it is \u201cdeeply concerning that Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A series of festival sponsors also cut their ties with Wireless as a result, including Pepsi, drinks giant Diageo,\u00a0PayPal and Rockstar Energy, piling enormous pressure on the festival to take of the concerts being cancelled, Benn issued a lengthy statement describing West\u2019s past antisemitic remarks as \u201cabhorrent\u201d, but called on people to \u201coffer some id=\"taboola-mid-article\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking about the cancellation now in a new interview with <em>NME<\/em>, when asked what lessons have been learned, he said: \u201cTiming, I think, is an important lesson. I would hope that other people learn the lesson of forgiveness, because forgiveness is an important part of being a decent human being, in my view. So I do think that is a lesson, but that\u2019s not my lesson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think timing is an important one, but Wireless will return. We\u2019re very confident about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West initially addressed his past antisemtic comments directly in his <em>Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>\u201cto those I\u2019ve hurt\u201d letter, which he originally shared in January, saying he \u201clost touch with reality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple Jewish groups responded to West\u2019s offer to meet and discuss his history of antisemitic comments, but still said he should not play at Wireless Festival.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He then shared a fresh apology following the controversy around his booking at Wireless which was later cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Following the cancellation, a spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism backed the government\u2019s decision to block the rapper from entering the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government has clearly made the right decision here. For once, when it said that antisemitism has no place in the UK, it backed up its words with action,\u201d they added at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone who has boasted of making tens of millions of dollars from selling swastika t-shirts and who released a song called \u2018Heil Hitler\u2019 just months ago clearly would not be conducive to the public good in the UK. Wireless Festival, in its desperate quest for profit, defended the invitation until the end.
