This is what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/life\/sotce-tiktok-interview\" class=\"T3D\">Sotce<\/a> had advised anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The spiritual poster, writer, and artist is dialing in from Massiaru, Estonia, where she\u2019s preparing to host her second annual \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DV6z3UHE0dN\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">Summer School,\u201d<\/a> a five-day stay at a post-Soviet boarding school. Handpicked from hundreds of applications, the attendees will experience a curriculum of writing, magic, yoga, singing, and meditation \u2014 practices intended, as Sotce puts it, to help them \u201cdevelop their trust in themselves, confidence, and intuition.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width:340px\" class=\"sWr iGR vrU\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"P4c nv3\">\n<blockquote data-tiktok=\"true\" data-video-id=\"7632135622760647967\">\n<div class=\"Duw\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@sotce\/video\/7632135622760647967?lang=en\" title=\"View on TikTok\" class=\"y9v nHf\"><i class=\"icx\"><\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since finding TikTok virality in 2020 for her equivocal observations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sweetrelease08\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">arcane memes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sotce.substack.com\/p\/success-is-like-renting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">diaries<\/a> spanning from girlhood to Buddhist philosophy, and podcasts, Sotce (pronounced \u201cSot-see\u201d) has cultivated a devoted online following. Her musings quickly became a refuge for hyper-online girls, eventually catching the fashion world\u2019s attention, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DTyCorFjRn6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"T3D\">fashion campaigns<\/a> as well as a clothing line inspired by her own Internet iconography. Stillness (or meditation) isn\u2019t just a theme in her work but the place from which she creates. \u201cIt is work and discipline to stay in tune with yourself, but I honestly don\u2019t know what else we should be doing here besides that,\u201d she says, \u201chere\u201d being Earth. \u201cAnd it\u2019s cheap&#8230; No, it\u2019s free. It\u2019s literally f*cking free.\u201d Her art (which she confesses she didn\u2019t know was art until the Internet had told her) depends upon this \u2014 and you can feel it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR vrU\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"BCT MJ1\">\n<blockquote data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYPcLlRuddL\" data-shortcode=\"DYPcLlRuddL\" class=\"UyF\">\n<div class=\"yzx\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYPcLlRuddL\" title=\"View on Instagram\" class=\"y9v GmH\"><i class=\"icx g9F\"><\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As a 19-year-old, she was \u201csent away\u201d to a Buddhist monastery in India (a story she\u2019ll explore for the first time in her forthcoming debut novel, <em>Love You<\/em>), where she captured her first TikTok video: a black cat prancing across a path that received 3 million views overnight. This was COVID TikTok, and she had somehow stumbled into a post-Tumblr audience, ready to receive her. \u201cIt was nuts on there. It was two brothers shirtless, people doing cosplay, these early debates that were really \u2018teenager.\u2019\u201d She hadn\u2019t been hyper-online prior to posting and wasn\u2019t aware that she had been speaking directly to a specific community of girls who had been waiting for it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR vrU\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"BCT MJ1\">\n<blockquote data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZSpkc5Fo0q\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" data-shortcode=\"DZSpkc5Fo0q\" class=\"UyF\">\n<div class=\"yzx\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZSpkc5Fo0q\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" title=\"View on Instagram\" class=\"y9v GmH\"><i class=\"icx g9F\"><\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Soon, she was responsible for some of the most recognizable TikToks of the era, sometimes captioned with original mantras, or picturing a comic dog telling something to a comic bunny, yet always communicating something profound. The Internet has since adopted elements of her visual language, with Arial font over photos and simplified metaphorical storytelling becoming a recognizable genre. \u201cThat\u2019s so fun and gratifying that that\u2019s a thing now.\u201d Often, she sees stuff like this on the Internet \u2014 and she can\u2019t tell whether or not she had made it.<\/p>\n<p>The world she\u2019s built online has since expanded offline through Summer School, where Sotce selected attendees she describes as \u201cbrave, interesting, alive, maybe sort of disenchanted with the state of things, and sort of in on the joke.\u201d As a grassroots effort, she also recruited eight of her friends to lead different wellness sessions creating the conditions for the kind of stillness that underpins her work. \u201cEvery single person who is unaligned with their experience [is] not sitting quietly and listening. We\u2019re inundated with media and opinions and everyone wants to tell you exactly who they are and convince you who you are&#8230; We spend our entire lives running in f*cking circles, dating the same type of person who\u2019s just like our parents, having the same type of relationships,\u201d she reflects. \u201cYou\u2019re free. You\u2019re completely free. You\u2019re not a f*cking tree.
