It\u2019s the 10th time the annual Grammy telecast has been nominated in that category (or in equivalent predecessor categories). The show has yet to win a top program award. It has lost to the Oscars twice, to the Tonys twice and to a variety of other shows once each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis year, the Grammys are competing with three other awards shows \u2013 the Oscars, the Tonys and the Golden Globes \u2013 as well as <em>The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny. <\/em>That last show may be Grammys\u2019 chief competition this year. Bad Bunny of course was also a major player on the Grammy telecast. He won two on-air awards \u2013 album of the year and best m\u00fasica urbana album. And a recurring bit on the show was host Trevor Noah trying to coax him to perform. Four of the six telecasts he hosted were nominated for the top program Emmy. He has announced that he won\u2019t return to host next year\u2019s show. The nod went to the show\u2019s producer, Marty Pasetta. This was the first nomination (in any category) for a Grammy telecast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong>About the show:\u00a0<\/strong>This was the seventh and final show hosted by\u00a0Andy Williams, whose TV star power in the 1960s and early \u201970s helped get the Grammys on the air in 1971.\u00a0Natalie Cole was the show\u2019s opening performer for the second year in a row, this time with \u201cMr. Melody.\u201d (She had opened the show the previous year with her breakthrough smash \u201cThis Will Be.\u201d) Stevie Wonder\u00a0won album of the year for\u00a0<em>Songs in the Key of Life<\/em>\u00a0and performed \u201cSir Duke\u201d live via satellite from Lagos, Nigeria. (Unfortunately, the satellite transmission was very glitchy.) This was Wonder\u2019s third album of the year win, a feat previously achieved only by Frank Sinatra.\u00a0Barry Manilow performed his signature hit \u201cI Write the Songs,\u201d but lost record of the year to George Benson\u2019s \u201cThis Masquerade.\u201d (\u201cI Write the Songs\u201d won song of the year for songwriter\u00a0Bruce Johnston.) Starland Vocal Band won best new artist on the back of their hit \u201cAfternoon Delight,\u201d which they performed on the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong>And the Emmy went to:<\/strong>\u00a0This was a \u201cjuried award.\u201d None of the five contenders received 50% of the vote, so no award was presented \u2013 a good way to disappoint everybody. The other nominees were the Oscars,\u00a0the Emmys, the Tonys and a PBS program,\u00a0<em>The Good Old Days of Radio<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item-wrap lrv-u-margin-b-2\">\n<article class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item\">\n<h2><strong>1988<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"pmc-not-a-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong><br \/><\/strong>The 30th annual Grammy Awards was nominated for outstanding variety-music events programming. The nod went to producers Pierre Cossette and Ken Ehrlich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong>About the show:<\/strong>\u00a0This was the second of three Grammy telecasts hosted by\u00a0Billy Crystal, who was nominated for outstanding individual achievement \u2013 special events.\u00a0Whitney Houston\u00a0opened the show with her zesty smash \u201cI Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).\u201d\u00a0Michael Jackson\u00a0stole the show with one of the most riveting performances in Grammy history \u2013 a double header of \u201cThe Way You Make Me Feel\u201d and \u201cMan in the Mirror.\u201d But he went home empty-handed that night.\u00a0U2\u00a0won album of the year for the first time for\u00a0<em>The Joshua Tree<\/em>.\u00a0Paul Simon\u00a0won record of the year for \u201cGraceland,\u201d becoming the first three-time winner in that category. The movie theme \u201cSomewhere Out There\u201d won song of the year.\u00a0Jody Watley\u00a0won best new artist, even though she had received a previous Grammy nod as a member of Shalamar. (That couldn\u2019t happen today.) In a Grammy rarity, the telecast didn\u2019t feature performances from any of the winners of the so-called Big Four awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong>And the Emmy went to:<\/strong>\u00a0The Oscars<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item-wrap lrv-u-margin-b-2\">\n<article class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item\">\n<h2><strong>2011<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"pmc-not-a-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong><br \/><\/strong>The 53rd annual Grammy Awards was nominated for outstanding special class programs. The nomination went to executive producers Ken Ehrlich and John Cossette, son of the telecast\u2019s original producer, Pierre Cossette. John Cossette died in April 2011, less than three months after this telecast aired (and less than two years after his father died). He was just 54.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \"><strong>About the show:<\/strong>\u00a0Lady A\u2019s \u201cNeed You Now\u201d took record and song of the year. The trio, then still known as Lady Antebellum, performed that smash on the show, along with \u201cAmerican Honey\u201d and a cover of the soul classic \u201cIf You Don\u2019t Know Me by Now.\u201d \u00a0Lady A\u2019s wins were expected, but few correctly predicted two other big winners.\u00a0Arcade Fire\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Suburbs<\/em>\u00a0upset\u00a0Eminem\u2019s\u00a0<em>Recovery<\/em>\u00a0to win album of the year. The Canadian indie rock band closed the show by performing two tracks from the album, \u201cMonth of May\u201d and \u201cReady to Start.\u201d In a Grammy shocker for the ages, jazz artist\u00a0Esperanza Spalding\u00a0beat\u00a0Justin Bieber,\u00a0Drake,\u00a0Florence + the Machine\u00a0and\u00a0Mumford &amp; Sons\u00a0for best new artist. From LL\u2019s heartfelt prayer to\u00a0Jennifer Hudson\u2019s subdued version of \u201cI Will Always Love You,\u201d the treatment of Houston\u2019s death hit all the right notes.\u00a0Bruce Springsteen &amp; the E Street Band opened the show with the rousing \u201cWe Take Care of Our Own.\u201d Adele\u00a0won six awards, including album of the year for\u00a0<em>21<\/em>\u00a0and record and song of the year for \u201cRolling in the Deep\u201d (which she performed on the telecast). Mars teamed with\u00a0Cardi B\u00a0to perform \u201cFinesse\u201d on the telecast (having performed \u201cThat\u2019s What I Like\u201d on the show the previous year when it was a brand-new release).\u00a0Alessia Cara\u00a0won best new artist and teamed with\u00a0Logic\u00a0and\u00a0Khalid\u00a0to close the show with their smash, \u201c1-800-273-8255\u201d (the phone number of the suicide prevention hotline). (Better late than never.)\u00a0Kacey Musgraves\u2019\u00a0<em>Golden Hour<\/em>\u00a0became the first country album to win album of the year since Taylor Swift\u2019s <em>Fearless<\/em> in 2010. Musgraves performed \u201cRainbow\u201d on the telecast.\u00a0Dua Lipa\u00a0took best new artist. Beyonc\u00e9\u00a0surpassed\u00a0Alison Krauss\u00a0as the woman with the most Grammys in history (28).\u00a0Billie Eilish\u00a0won record of the year for \u201cEverything I Wanted,\u201d making her just the third artist in Grammy history to win back-to-back awards in this category.\u00a0She also performed the song on the show.
