It was the midway point of the rollout of his Mercury Prize-winning LP <em>People Watching<\/em>, and also his largest-ever headline show. But perhaps the most consequential moment from it came midway through the set, album deep cut \u201cRein Me In\u201d got an airing, with the show\u2019s support act Olivia Dean, then a rising star, joining on vocals for a new verse. Now their careers \u2013 and that song \u2013 appear unstoppable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cRein Me In\u201d is into record-breaking territory on the U.K.\u2019s Official Singles Chart. The track has earned 16 weeks at No. 1, and become the longest-running No. 1 single of the 2020s so far \u2014 surpassing Alex Warren\u2019s \u201cOrdinary,\u201d which notched 13 weeks last year. It is now tied with Drake\u2019s \u201cOne Dance\u201d as the longest-running No. 1 in the 21st century, and surpassed Wet Wet Wet\u2019s \u201cLove is All Around,\u201d written by Reg Presley, as the longest-running British No. 1 of all time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn February, it earned the BRIT Awards\u2019 publicly-voted song of the year prize, with Dean and Fender on hand to collect the prize in Manchester. Amidst chart dominance in early May, Dean returned the favour by inviting Fender to give the song a rare live outing at her headline performances at London\u2019s O2 Arena. Speaking to <em>Genius<\/em>, the 32-year-old said that he had \u201cconsistently liked this song\u201d since he wrote it as a solo piece five years ago, and that the tale of regret and excess speaks to moments in his own life. Writing for <em>Billboard U.K.<\/em>, Sophie Williams said that \u201cRein Me In\u201d features \u201ca vocal performance that delivers the type of passion and intensity that, the closer you listen, you can feel in your chest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDean felt that, too. Both acts are signed to UMG U.K. labels, with Fender inked to Polydor and Dean on Capitol U.K. When Fender sent the album across to Dean, she picked \u201cRein Me In\u201d as the song she wanted to contribute to and provided an original second verse, co-written with Max Wolfgang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe mid-tempo rock song was flipped on its head, with Dean turning the original\u2019s self-pitying diatribe into an open dialogue and offering a glimmer of redemption: \u201cI see the tears of a man too proud to reach for a hand,\u201d she sings, imploring to \u201clet my love keep you safe now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRichard O\u2019Donovan, head of A&amp;R at Polydor, tells <em>Billboard U.K.<\/em>, \u201cAfter the record-breaking launch of Sam\u2019s <em>People Watching<\/em>, we could tell there was something special about \u2018Rein Me In.\u2019 We knew it had single potential, but we were utterly blown away when we received Olivia\u2019s version. It brings a whole new lens to this incredible song.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item-wrap lrv-u-margin-b-2\">\n<article class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item\">\n<h2>The Performance<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pmc-not-a-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFender\u2019s 82,500-capacity show at the London Stadium was the Geordie star\u2019s largest-ever headline show, and arrived after a number of U.K. indoor arena tours and festival headline slots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDean\u2019s involvement, however, is something of a sliding-doors moment. Initially, The War on Drugs was set to be the main support for the show, an extension of Adam Granduciel\u2019s production work on <em>People Watching<\/em>. When the group pulled out from the show, Dean was drafted in as a late replacement; \u201cNice to Each Other,\u201d the lead single from her sophomore album <em>The Art of Loving<\/em>, was released the previous week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHalfway through the show, Fender beckoned Dean to come on stage and revealed that they\u2019d recorded a collaboration, and they were going to debut the song live together. \u201cWe\u2019ll see how it goes,\u201d he joked as Dean laughed with uncertainty. Two weeks later, the studio version of the collaboration was officially released on all streaming services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHaving these two extraordinary UK artists together on a track created so much fan excitement,\u201d O\u2019Donovan adds. \u201cOnce they performed it live at Sam\u2019s summer stadium shows and everyone saw them together on stage, the live footage just exploded online and took the song to a new level. The same happened around Olivia\u2019s recent shows when Sam surprised audiences in London \u2013 the response was phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item-wrap lrv-u-margin-b-2\">\n<article class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item\">\n<h2>The Charts<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pmc-not-a-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore Dean took over the U.K. Singles Chart with her solo material (\u201cMan I Need\u201d reached No. 1 in September 2025), \u201cRein Me In\u201d hit No. 6 in late June after the revamped release. It would drop back and settle into a position in the mid-teens for the coming months before breaking inside the top 10 in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe song also exploited a quirk: Official Chart Company rules mandate that only an artist\u2019s three most popular songs (based on combined sales and streams) can chart in the top 100 at any given time. The rule does not apply to features and collaborations, so \u201cRein Me In\u201d allowed Dean a fourth entry into the charts, and capitalized on her growing stature. By October, Dean became the first female solo artist to simultaneously have four singles in the top 10. A month later, Fender released a concert film of the show on YouTube, further boosting the song\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn late February, following Dean\u2019s win at the Grammys for best new artist, the song completed a 35-week rise to the top spot, to give Fender his first No. 1 and Dean her second. The song went onto win the fan-voted song of the year at the 2026 BRIT Awards in Manchester just days later (March 1).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the 20 week stretch since it first hit the top, the song has occupied the No. 1 spot for 15 of them. Only Harry Styles (\u201cAmerican Girls,\u201d one week), Olivia Rodrigo (\u201cDrop Dead,\u201d one week; \u201cThe Cure,\u201d one week) Ariana Grande (\u201cHate That I Made You Love Me,\u201d one week) and Taylor Swift (\u2018I Knew It, I Knew You,\u201d one week) have been able to dislodge the duo. Bruno Mars, Tame Impala, Alex Warren and Drake have all been denied a stay at the top spot during the reign of \u201cRein.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe song has succeeded internationally, too. The song peaked at No. 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 to give Fender his first entry on the charts, and has topped charts in Ireland and Australia, alongside strong showings in the Netherlands and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item-wrap lrv-u-margin-b-2\">\n<article class=\"pmc-fallback-list-item\">\n<h2>The Records<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pmc-not-a-paywall\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring its 16-week stay at the summit, records have tumbled. The song dethroned Alex Warren to become the longest-running No. 1 of the 2020s (\u201cOrdinary,\u201d 13 weeks) and the longest-running No. 1 by a British act this century (Ed Sheeran\u2019s \u201cShape of You,\u201d 14 weeks).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt has now passed Wet Wet Wet\u2019s \u201cLove Is All Around\u201d at 15 weeks, and trails just one song in the all-time ranking: \u201cI Believe\u201d by Frankie Laine (18 weeks, 1953).
