\n\tAs Madonna\u2019s new studio album, CONFESSIONS II<\/em>, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated July 18), the Queen of Pop joins the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in the top 10. Jackson\u2019s former 1983-84 No. 1 Thriller<\/em> falls 7-8 on the latest chart. Perhaps surprisingly, this is only the second time that the pair has appeared in the top 10 at the same time, and it last happened nearly 25 years ago. \n\tMadonna and Jackson previously shared space in the top 10 on the Dec. 1, 2001-dated chart. That week, Jackson\u2019s chart-topping Invincible<\/em> fell 3-4 in its third week on the list, while Madonna\u2019s compilation GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2<\/em> debuted at No. 7. The next week both albums dropped out of the top 10 \u2013 although they remained in the top 15 together.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two icons almost met up in the top 10 in the 1980s \u2014 when they spent a combined 57 weeks at No. 1 \u2014 but missed one another by a single week. On the Sept. 19, 1987-dated chart, the Madonna-led Who\u2019s That Girl<\/em> film soundtrack spent its third and final week in the top 10, at No. 7. The following week Who\u2019s That Girl<\/em> fell to No. 11, while Michael Jackson\u2019s Bad<\/em> debuted at No. 1. Then, on the Oct. 3-dated chart, Who\u2019s That Girl<\/em> remained at No. 11, while Bad<\/em> held at No. 1.<\/p>\n

Who\u2019s That Girl<\/em> and Bad<\/em> may have never shared time in the top 10, but they did both appear in the top 15 of the chart for four straight weeks (Sept. 26 \u2013 Oct. 17, 1987 charts).<\/p>\n

\n\tMadonna and Jackson had another close encounter on the Jan. 23, 1988-dated Billboard 200, when they were both in the top 15. Madonna\u2019s remix album You Can Dance<\/em> climbed 17-14 (to its peak), while Bad<\/em> held at No. 4.<\/p>\n

\n\tConsidering Madonna and Jackson\u2019s potent chart histories, how\u00a0is it\u00a0that they have barely crossed paths in the top 10,\u00a0especially in the \u201880s when they spent a combined 57 weeks at No. 1 (16 and 41, respectively)? Madonna hit the top 10 for the first time on the Oct. 6, 1984-dated chart, with her self-titled debut. By that point, Jackson\u2019s mega-hit\u00a0Thriller<\/em>\u00a0had already departed the top 10 (where it had been lodged from January\u00a01983 through June 1984).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing\u00a0Thriller<\/em>, Jackson would chart four more top 10s before his death in 2009. After his passing, he notched another four top 10s. Meanwhile, Madonna was much more prolific in her output, as her self-titled set was\u00a0her\u00a0first of 24 top 10s, through\u00a0CONFESSIONS II<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso factoring into\u00a0the pair\u00a0missing\u00a0each other\u00a0through the years: their major new albums were often not released in close proximity\u00a0to\u00a0one another. Scrolling back in time, there were only four instances\u00a0in which\u00a0Madonna and Jackson released top 10-charting albums within six months of\u00a0each other. It happened in 1987 with\u00a0Who\u2019s That Girl<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Bad<\/em>;\u00a0in 1995 with Madonna\u2019s\u00a0ballads compilation\u00a0Something\u00a0To\u00a0Remember<\/em>\u00a0and Jackson\u2019s\u00a0half-studio album\/half-hits set\u00a0HIStory<\/em>;\u00a0in 2001 with\u00a0GHV2<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Invincible<\/em>;\u00a0and in 2009 with Madonna\u2019s best-of\u00a0Celebration<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0posthumous\u00a0Michael Jackson\u2019s This Is It<\/em>\u00a0film soundtrack.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
