desired&#8230; But optics aside, the Rolling Stones astonish in the way they expand their late creative burst and prove they&#8217;ve lost none of their momentum.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div But instead of harking back to the past, the Rolling Stones make their new album \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019 sound immediate, forward-facing, and anything but a trip down memory lane.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s quite the feat for an album recorded by artists in their 80s &#8211; with Ronnie Wood as the band&#8217;s spring chicken at 79. In all fairness, they could have used their 25th studio album as an excuse to look back at their seven-decade career, take stock and ponder on their legacy. \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019 says, \u201cBollocks to that, anyone fancy some killer hooks that would make anyone 50 years younger green with envy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As impressive as that spirit is, what\u2019s even more astonishing is how Mick Jagger has managed to preserve his vocal cords from the indignities of age. However, when re-listening to it, the songs feel a bit limp by comparison. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood\u2019s guitars take center stage, the bluesy licks hit, the melodies are bigger, and the band\u2019s verve sounds truly revitalised.<\/p>\n<p>What follows is a tight and kinetic collection of rock gems (\u2018Divine Intervention\u2019), funky pop (\u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019), stadium rousers (\u2018Hit Me in the Head\u2019) and a confessional solo spotlight from Richards (\u2018Some Of Us\u2019). The band even lash out at points.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond getting a jab in at \u201cmad mogul Mr. Musk\u201d on \u2018Mr. Charm\u2019 and bemoaning how autocrats \u201cseem to be breeding like a swarm of dirty rats with their missiles on parade&#8221; on \u2018Covered In You\u2019, the veteran rockers deliver a remarkable honky tonk breakup song titled \u2018Ringing Hollow\u2019, in which Jagger sings about falling out of love with the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell I was madly in love with you before we ever met \/ Watched all your movies, smoked your cigarettes&#8230;\u201d it goes, before noting how \u201cthere\u2019s always a scoundrel trying to whip up the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLady Liberty don\u2019t look so good when there\u2019s a tear in her gown,\u201d it continues.<\/p>\n<p>No one is mentioned by name, but we all know who the scoundrel is.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">The Rolling Stones\u2019 Keith Richards: America is &#8216;a bit of a disappointment at the moment&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Somewhat disappointing are the much-publicised guest spots on the album, with Paul McCartney playing bass on \u2018Covered in You\u2019, Bruno Mars picking up a cowbell on \u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019 and The Cure\u2019s Robert Smith contributing guitar and backup vocals on \u2018Divine Intervention\u2019 and \u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The songs are great, but the cameos don\u2019t register as particularly essential. The same could be said about the album\u2019s two cover songs. The Stones&#8217; versions of Amy Winehouse\u2019s \u2018You Know I\u2019m No Good\u2019 and Chuck Berry&#8217;s \u2018Beautiful Delilah\u2019 aren&#8217;t duds by any stretch; but you are left with the niggling feeling that if they\u2019d ended up on the cutting room floor, the album wouldn\u2019t have been weaker for it.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for those minor bum notes, the album is striking in how consistent, kinetic and polished it sounds. Kudos to returning 35-year-old producer extraordinaire Andrew Watt on that front.<\/p>\n<p>The only clear clunker is the syrupy \u2018Jealous Lover\u2019, which tries a bit too hard to be this album\u2019s \u2018Emotional Rescue\u2019 &#8211; and fails. It\u2019s hard to get too upset about it though, especially when you have Jagger\u2019s strongest vocal performance in years on \u2018Back In Your Life\u2019 and the standout track \u2018In The Stars\u2019. It&#8217;s the Stones\u2019 most infectiously catchy song since 1994\u2019s \u2018You Got Me Rocking\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you wanna dance until the roof caves in? \/ Yeah, and the guitars scream and the choir still sings,\u201d Jagger hollers.<\/p>\n<p>The guitars are still screaming, the choirs are singing, and unbelievably, the Stones can still make you want to cave in a roof.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Foreign Tongues\u2019 is not only a step up from 2023&#8217;s \u2018Hackney Diamonds\u2019 but also a potent reminder that it may not be the years nor the mileage that count when it comes to Jagger, Richards and Wood. It\u2019s the desire to keep their enthusiasm alive.<\/p>\n<p>There is one worrying line in \u2018Some Of Us\u2019, in which Richards discloses that \u201csome of us are on our knees\u201d&#8230; But we needn&#8217;t fret. Considering how \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019 might be their best album since 1981\u2019s \u2018Tattoo You\u2019, it&#8217;s clear they&#8217;re still standing tall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rolling But instead of harking back to the past, the Rolling Stones make their new album \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019 sound immediate, forward-facing, and anything but a trip down memory lane.It\u2019s quite the feat for an album recorded by artists in their 80s &#8211; with Ronnie Wood as\u00a0the band&#8217;s spring chicken at 79. In all fairness, they could have\u00a0used their 25th studio album as an excuse to look back at their seven-decade career, take stock and ponder on their legacy. \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019 says, \u201cBollocks to that, anyone fancy some killer hooks that would make anyone 50 years younger green with envy?\u201dAs\u00a0impressive as that spirit is, what\u2019s even more\u00a0astonishing\u00a0is how Mick Jagger has managed to preserve his vocal cords from the indignities of age. At nearly 83 years old, the frontman\u00a0has lost none of his swagger or signature yowls.How he\u2019s doing it, we\u2019ll never know; but after listening to \u2018Foreign Tongues\u2019, you\u2019ll swear him and his lot will outlive us all.From the opening double-tap of \u2018Rough And Twisted\u2019 and \u2018In The Stars\u2019, the band prove from the get-go that this follow-up to 2023\u2019s \u2018Hackney Diamonds\u2019\u00a0is richer, more rambunctious and significantly more memorable than the band\u2019s hiatus-ending first album of original material since 2005.No shade to \u2018Hackney Diamonds\u2019, which was a welcome creative resurgence. However, when re-listening to it,\u00a0the songs feel a\u00a0bit limp by comparison. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood\u2019s guitars take center stage, the bluesy licks hit, the melodies are bigger, and the band\u2019s verve sounds truly revitalised.What follows is a tight and kinetic collection of\u00a0rock gems\u00a0(\u2018Divine Intervention\u2019), funky pop (\u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019), stadium rousers\u00a0(\u2018Hit Me in the Head\u2019) and a confessional solo spotlight from Richards\u00a0(\u2018Some Of Us\u2019). The band even lash out at points.Beyond getting a jab in at \u201cmad mogul Mr. Musk\u201d on\u00a0\u2018Mr. Charm\u2019 and bemoaning how autocrats \u201cseem to be breeding like a swarm of dirty rats with their missiles on parade&#8221; on \u2018Covered In You\u2019, the veteran rockers deliver a remarkable honky tonk breakup song titled \u2018Ringing Hollow\u2019, in which Jagger sings about falling out of love with the US.\u201cWell I was madly in love with you before we ever met \/ Watched all your movies, smoked your cigarettes&#8230;\u201d it goes, before noting how \u201cthere\u2019s always a scoundrel trying to whip up the crowd.\u201d\u201cLady Liberty don\u2019t look so good when there\u2019s a tear in her gown,\u201d it continues.No\u00a0one is mentioned by name, but we all know who the scoundrel is.Somewhat disappointing are the much-publicised guest spots on the album, with Paul McCartney playing bass on\u00a0\u2018Covered in You\u2019, Bruno Mars picking up a cowbell on \u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019 and The Cure\u2019s Robert Smith contributing guitar and backup vocals on \u2018Divine Intervention\u2019 and \u2018Never Wanna Lose You\u2019.The songs are great, but the cameos don\u2019t register as particularly essential. The same could be said about the album\u2019s\u00a0two cover songs. The Stones&#8217; versions of Amy Winehouse\u2019s \u2018You Know I\u2019m No Good\u2019 and Chuck Berry&#8217;s \u2018Beautiful Delilah\u2019 aren&#8217;t duds\u00a0by any stretch; but you are left with\u00a0the niggling feeling that if they\u2019d ended up on the cutting room floor, the album wouldn\u2019t have been weaker for it.Still, for those minor bum notes, the album is striking in how consistent, kinetic\u00a0and polished it sounds. Kudos to returning 35-year-old producer extraordinaire Andrew Watt on that front.The only clear clunker is the syrupy \u2018Jealous Lover\u2019, which tries a bit too hard to be this album\u2019s \u2018Emotional Rescue\u2019\u00a0&#8211; and fails.\u00a0It\u2019s hard to get too upset about it though, especially when you have Jagger\u2019s strongest vocal performance in years on \u2018Back In Your Life\u2019 and the standout track \u2018In The Stars\u2019. It&#8217;s the Stones\u2019\u00a0most infectiously catchy song since 1994\u2019s \u2018You Got Me Rocking\u2019.\u201cDo you wanna dance until the roof caves in? \/ Yeah, and the guitars scream and the choir still sings,\u201d Jagger hollers.The guitars are still screaming, the choirs are singing, and unbelievably, the Stones can still make you want to cave in a roof.&#8217;Foreign Tongues\u2019 is\u00a0not only a\u00a0step up from 2023&#8217;s \u2018Hackney Diamonds\u2019 but also a potent reminder that it may not be the years nor the mileage that count when it comes to Jagger, Richards and Wood. It\u2019s the desire to keep their enthusiasm alive.There is one\u00a0worrying line in \u2018Some Of Us\u2019, in which Richards discloses that \u201csome of us are on our knees\u201d&#8230; But we needn&#8217;t fret.
