Remember when 32-inch wheels were dismissed as another cycling fad that would never catch on? Fast-forward to today. Robin Gemperle won Unbound XL on a prototype Scott running 32-inch wheels, and suddenly, the hype doesn\u2019t seem so far-fetched.<\/p>\n

If you are now a believer and ready to make the leap to 32-inch wheels, the biggest challenge isn\u2019t finding the wheels\u2014it is tracking down some tires. Thankfully, I did the research so you don\u2019t have to. This is a comprehensive guide to every 32-inch tire currently available, along with a few prototypes on the horizon.<\/p>\n

The Case for 32\u201d Wheels<\/h2>\n

In case you missed it, 32-inch wheels were all the buzz at this year\u2019s Sea Otter Classic. The appeal comes down to physics. A larger wheel rolls over obstacles with a shallower angle of attack\u2014the degree at which your tire meets an obstacle like rocks or roots. The bigger the wheel, the less force you need to climb over these obstacles. This means the bike can maintain greater momentum, ultimately helping you enjoy a smoother ride.<\/p>\n

Once up to speed, the larger diameter wheel also makes it easier to fly through chunky sections. Thanks to greater rotational inertia, larger wheels lose less momentum with each impact. Think of it like the difference between floating over something versus hitting everything.<\/p>\n

But 32\u201d Isn\u2019t For Everyone<\/h2>\n

Back to that physics problem. A larger wheel also means a larger bike. It sounds obvious, but once you increase the wheel diameter, the entire platform has to grow too. Everything scales up.<\/p>\n

For shorter riders, that is where the conversation gets tricky. These bikes are largely designed with taller riders in mind. Some companies are working to make 32-inch-wheeled bikes more accessible to a broader range of people, such as the Salsa Fargo. However, fitting these giant hoops without compromising the bike\u2019s geometry still requires some clever engineering.<\/p>\n

Plus, there are other trade-offs. Larger wheels are generally heavier, take more effort to accelerate, and cannot easily be swapped onto just any old bike frame. But if you are a taller rider, 32-inch wheels are becoming an increasingly compelling proposition.<\/p>\n

The Challenge of Tires<\/h2>\n

Like most new tech, the supporting ecosystem often takes longer to catch up than the initial launch. That is exactly where we are at with 32-inch wheels. While the bikes are starting to arrive, the tire market is still playing catch-up.<\/p>\n

Most major tire manufacturers are still working through prototypes or simply aren\u2019t ready to show their hand. At Sea Otter, asking about 32-inch tires usually ended in the same response: a smile, a wink, and a polite, \u201cNo comment.\u201d It is a pretty clear sign something is happening behind the scenes. Now, some of those developments are here, while others are still in a back room somewhere.<\/p>\n

Teravail wasted no time jumping into the 32-inch market with the Camrock. This was one of the most common tires fitted to the 32-inch bikes on display at Sea Otter. Available in both light trail and durable casings, this tire lets riders choose between saving weight and gaining extra puncture protection. Plus, Teravail is one of the few companies offering a 32-inch tire in a tan sidewall option.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

One of the most beloved XC tires on the market has made the jump to a 32-inch option. It is designed for minimal rolling resistance thanks to a lower-profile tread pattern. Paired with grippy side knobbies, this tire provides the ideal blend of speed and cornering traction. Optimized for an internal rim width of 30mm, it is tubeless-ready for adventure.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Long before Sea Otter put 32-inch wheels in the spotlight, Vee was already building tires for them. The T-Monster was one of the first commercially available 32-inch tires. At 1,605g, it isn\u2019t chasing podiums, but if durability is your priority, it is still a viable option.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

This is a unicycle tire. Yes, you read that right. In fact, this company was years ahead of everyone else in making tires to fit a 32-inch rim. Is it the most practical option? Not really. But if you want a cycling oddity to add to your build, this would definitely be it.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Prototyping and R&D<\/h2>\n

These are some of the companies we saw showcasing prototypes at Sea Otter, which means they hopefully aren\u2019t too far from hitting store shelves.<\/p>\n

Speaking with the Vittoria team at Sea Otter, we noticed a lot of excitement about what is to come. Both the Mezcal and Peyote were on display as concept products, with launch timing still TBD. Vittoria also showcased the first-ever sustainable MTB tire made from recycled commercial fishing nets, which is definitely one to keep an eye on. There is also speculation that a 32-inch Terreno T50 gravel tire is in the works. We cannot confirm nor deny this claim, but we can certainly hope.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Schwalbe G-One<\/h2>\n

Winners run Schwalbe; at least, that is what Robin Gemperle used for his Unbound XL victory. Schwalbe confirmed that he was racing on a prototype 32-inch G-One RX Pro. It is also confirmed that none of the company\u2019s 32-inch tires will be available this year, so fingers are crossed for sometime in 2027.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

These were spotted at Sea Otter, but not at the Schwalbe booth. Instead, they were mounted on various 32-inch-wheeled bikes across the show. There is not much to find online, but having seen these in person, they are very much real.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Coming Soon<\/h2>\n

It is no surprise that the big companies are working to get these tires out, but the corporate wheels (pun intended) do take a while to turn. That said, here is what we know and what we have heard about 32-inch tires on the horizon.<\/p>\n

Maxxis Aspen AT<\/h2>\n

A little beefier and designed for even more traction than the standard Aspen, this tire is ideal for riders who want to get rowdy in rougher terrain. While it is listed on the Maxxis website, it does not appear to be ready for purchase yet.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Maxxis Forekaster<\/h2>\n

While the 32-inch Forekaster appears in the Maxxis size chart, it is not yet available to purchase. Designed for loose, wet trails, it will be a welcome addition for riders who regularly deal with mud, roots, and unpredictable conditions.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Maxxis Dissector<\/h2>\n

Same story here: the 32-inch Dissector is listed in the lineup but is still waiting in the wings. Built for trail riders rather than XC racers, it is another sign that 32-inch wheels are quickly growing beyond their race-bike origins.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

This was another Sea Otter scoop when I visited the Kenda booth. The Dagger XC will be coming to a 32-inch gravel bike wheel near you. Just like adding drop bars to mountain bikes, this tire is a blend of gravel and XC. Hopefully, it will be available as soon as the fall of 2026.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Teravail Cannonball<\/h2>\n

It is a race to see who can get the first dedicated 32-inch gravel tire to market, and Teravail definitely has a head start. The Cannonball was unveiled at Sea Otter alongside the new 32-inch Salsa Fargo. For riders who have been waiting for something purpose-built for gravel instead of repurposing mountain bike tires, this is one of the most anticipated launches in the 32-inch space.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Who\u2019s Missing?<\/h2>\n

Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, Specialized, Bontrager, and WTB have yet to publicly share their intentions regarding 32-inch tires. Are they secretly testing prototypes, or simply waiting to see if 32-inch wheels are more than a niche experiment? We reached out to each of these manufacturers, but at the time of publishing, the answer is still \u201cno comment.\u201d<\/p>\n

One thing seems inevitable: if 32-inch wheels continue to win races and gain traction with riders, it won\u2019t be long before more tire manufacturers join the party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
