\n\tPrior to SummerStage kicking off its 40th anniversary season, founder Joe Killian sat down with Billboard<\/em> at Rumsey Playfield last month to talk about the best of what the New York City summer concert series has to offer. \u201cThere were some days here in July and August where it\u2019s in the 90s, you\u2019ve got 5,000 to 6,000 people sweating and drinking beer, and you smell both beer and sweat,\u201d Killian said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile it wasn\u2019t quite that balmy on Wednesday (July 8) night when Spoon and opening acts Bodega and Ratboys played SummerStage 2026, the sensory experience was much the way Killian described it: a gorgeous communal night for music and revelry inside the lush, skyscraper-lined environs of Central Park.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe occasional gray head and hipsters with children old enough to sing along to songs like \u201cThe Underdog\u201d and \u201cI Turn My Camera On\u201d was a gentle reminder that SummerStage wasn\u2019t the only entity celebrating an anniversary this year: it\u2019s been 30 since the Austin band\u2019s debut album, Telephono<\/em>, and 25 years since their creative breakthrough, the low-key masterpiece Girls Can Tell.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI love a show in New York in the summertime,\u201d frontman Britt Daniel told the rapt crowd. After promising some \u201cnew old songs\u201d the band hadn\u2019t played in a while, Daniel added, \u201cWe learned some new new songs, too. We\u2019ve been working on a record.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTheir last album, Lucifer on the Sofa, <\/em>went top 40 on the Billboard 200 in 2022 and produced their third Adult Alternative Airplay Chart topper, \u201cThe Hardest Cut\u201d (which was the third song in their SummerStage setlist). Considering the band struggled to get heard in the \u201890s and existed mostly as critics\u2019 darling for the first half of the \u201800s (2005\u2019s Gimme Fiction <\/em>was their first LP to even hit the Billboard 200), Spoon\u2019s curving road to success has been well earned. And that slow and steady rise to niche fame has made Spoon one hell of a live band \u2013 vibrating with nervous tension one moment (\u201cTake a Walk\u201d), crackling and commanding the next (\u201cMy Mathematical Mind\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tDaniel introduced \u201cOut Go the Lights,\u201d a reflective track from 2010\u2019s Transference<\/em>, as \u201cone of my favorite Spoon songs we never got to play before this tour.\u201d But the real surprise was the band welcoming \u201ca dear friend of ours, straight from the Hamptons\u201d to the Rumsey Playfield stage: Hamilton Leithauser. The Walkmen frontman joined them for not one but two songs: a loose version of Spoon\u2019s \u201cDo You\u201d and a freewheeling take on a truly old-school rock classic, Larry Williams\u2019 \u201cBony Maronie\u201d from 1957. While they\u2019re far from overly serious, Spoon has a decidedly art-rock bend \u2013 they can jam, but they\u2019re not really known for shaking out sillies on stage, so it was a treat to watch them cut loose with Leithauser.<\/p>\n

After Leithauser left the stage, Spoon trotted out another cover, one far more in keeping with their sonic world \u2013 David Bowie\u2019s \u201cI Can\u2019t Give Everything Away,\u201d the final track on his swan song Blackstar<\/em> (which was recorded in Manhattan). Like Bowie, Spoon is proving to be a rock act that is capable of maturing without softening, aging without slowing down.<\/p>\n

\n\tPrior to Spoon, opening act Ratboys delivered a delightfully easygoing set, dedicating \u201cGo Outside\u201d to Central Park\u2019s famous pond turtles; and before them, Bodega offered up their own surprise guest \u2013 Britt Daniel, who joined them to sing Spoon\u2019s \u201cThe Fitted Shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMix in some gentle dancing and the smell of sweat and beer, and you have another lovely SummerStage night befitting a 40th anniversary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
