And yet, we weren’t expecting this.

Because you see, when Denza pulled the wraps off the production spec Z in the Duke of Richmond’s front garden, it also confirmed the tri-motor, all-electric Porsche 911 rival would get a frankly ridiculous 1,582bhp. Yeesh.

With orders set to open on our shores in October this year (and deliveries potentially kicking off before the end of the year), it has also been confirmed that prices will start at £142,900.

The four-seat Denza will actually be offered in three different variants, with a standard Coupe, a droptop Spider (£159,900) and an aero-obsessed Racing (£172,900). All get that headline power figure and 915lb ft of torque, but the Racing is the quickest with an almost unbelievable 0-62mph time of 1.96 seconds and a top speed of 217mph. The circa-two-tonne Coupe does the same sprint in 2.25 seconds (hardly shabby), while the Spider will dislodge your wig in 2.3 seconds.

Carbon ceramic brake discs are standard fit to help slow the Z, and there’s Denza’s ‘DiSus-M’ magnetorheological dampers onboard. The Coupe and Spider both get air suspension, while the Racing has a more track-focused setup with coil springs. All variants will get a Drift mode, plus a Boost mode that ups torque by 30 per cent for 20 seconds, and there’s the option of activating fake engine noises or sci-fi sounds for those inside and outside of the car.

Looks like there might be some form of fake gearshifts too based on those paddles behind the steering wheel, while the rest of the interior makes use of carbon fibre and Alcantara. There’s also an 8.88in dial display and a 12.8in infotainment screen that’s running Google built-in.

The battery is BYD’s second gen Blade unit, and all Zs get a usable capacity of 76kWh. That allows for 254 miles of range in the Coupe, 248 miles in the Spider and 236 miles in the rapid Racing. It also means it can make use of BYD’s 1,500kW Flash chargers, which will allow for a 10 to 97 per cent top up in just nine minutes.

It’s certainly a supercar shape, that’s for sure, and the last image in the gallery above shows the Racing version with its carbon front splitter, extra vents and giant adjustable (but optional) rear wing. We’re promised 1,060kg of downforce at 217mph for that one. The standard Coupe is fairly clean in its look though, with neat shapes and intakes to manoeuvre air around the car. It’s also just under 4.8m long, so it’s the smallest Denza yet.

Certainly a bit smaller than the Denza Bao 5 that was also unveiled in UK production spec at Goodwood. That’s a giant plug-in hybrid Defender rival with two electric motors and a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-pot for a combined output of 537bhp. Prices for that will start at £69,500.

We’ve known for a while now that BYD’s fancy subbrand Denza would launch its supercar at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
