RUF Automobile has built an engine with eight cylinders and many horsepowers. It is called the \u2018Boxer-Eight\u2019 \u2013 or B8 for short \u2013 and it has been slotted into a modified RUF prototype ahead of a demonstration run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.<\/p>\n

Fitting, because this B8 churns out more than 1,000bhp and 738lb ft of torque and- oh, what\u2019s that, the whole \u2018boxer-eight\u2019 thing? Yes, RUF has built an engine with eight horizontally-opposed<\/em> cylinders. A flat-eight. Flat-eights aren\u2019t usually bolted into road cars (except for Gary Oldman<\/a>\u2019s new favourite company, Runge<\/a>, of course).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

No, they\u2019re normally associated with racing machinery, and of course it was Porsche who pioneered the flat-eight for Formula One and sportscar prototypes decades ago. \u201cA boxer-eight has never been part of our story,\u201d said boss Alois Ruf, \u201cor anyone else\u2019s in this form, so we decided to write a new chapter in automotive history.\u201d<\/p>\n

That new chapter is internally known as the \u2018Erpober\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Tester\u2019 \u2013 comprised of 4.8-litres and two turbochargers, slotted into a modified RUF CTR3 to showcase the fact it\u2019s being designed for future road use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Said CTR3 has been stretched by 100mm so that it can absorb those eight flat<\/em> cylinders, and also features a six-speed manual gearbox. \u201cThe decision to use the CTR3 supercar was strategic,\u201d said RUF, \u201callowing [us] to test the limits of the new engine\u2019s performance while remaining under the radar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not so much under it any more, not least with that new livery that depicts eight furious cylinders working furiously. “When designing the B8 livery, I wanted the graphics to tell the story of the car before anyone even heard the engine,\u201d said Mr Ruf. \u201cEvery line represents movement, and the flowing form of the number eight became a natural symbol, not only for the new boxer-eight cylinder, but for the endless pursuit of improvement and refinement that has always been part of our family’s philosophy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cCombined with the unmistakable Blossom Yellow of the CTR Yellowbird, the design honours our heritage while looking confidently toward the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

We do not know when this future will materialise, but we do know Tanner Foust<\/a> \u2013 may have heard of him \u2013 will be driving the prototype B8 at Goodwood throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n
