src=&#8221;https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2284649509.jpg&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-wrap fp-contentTarget\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"mb-base-loose flex flex-wrap gap-(--spacing-base)\">\n<div class=\"fp-remove flex items-center justify-start gap-(--spacing-base-tight)\"><span class=\"font-utility-2 font-bold text-primary\">Andrew Hood<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pub-date font-utility-2 text-secondary\">Published July 8, 2026 01:23PM<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jonas Vingegaard barely escaped disastrous time losses Wednesday in a nervous crash-marred finale on stage 5 of the Tour de France.<\/p>\n<p>A fast bike swap and a favorable race jury ruling kept the Visma-Lease a Bike leader level with Tadej Poga\u010dar just a day before the Tour\u2019s first mountain stage.<\/p>\n<p>It could have gone the other way.<\/p>\n<p>The Visma-Lease a Bike leader was caught up behind a late crash just beyond the race\u2019s 5-kilometer safety zone, meaning that time splits at the line count in the general classification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonas had to change bikes in the finale, after which he reached the finish on Victor\u2019s bike,\u201d Visma sport director Marc Reef said. \u201cFortunately, the team suffered little damage in the end and Jonas finished in the same time as his opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a few anxious moments, it appeared Vingegaard\u2019s near-perfect opening week might unravel when riders crashed just outside the 5km to go banner.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Quick bike change helps save the day<\/h2>\n<p>Teammate Campenaerts saved the day by handing over his bike and Visma teammates helped drive him to the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew it was a dangerous corner,\u201d Reef told Belgian TV. \u201cJonas got his bike from Victor, we rode hard to the finish line, and it didn\u2019t cost us anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially, it appeared Vingegaard might have conceded precious seconds to Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p>The crash occurred just beyond the 5-kilometer safety zone but it was unclear if the race jury would impose time gaps on the bunch because the crash was so close to the limit.<\/p>\n<p>Officials results later confirmed that the race jury assess splits at the finish after it appeared that the Dane rolled in about 10 seconds behind Poga\u010dar and other GC rivals.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for Visma, the race jury ruled there were many other riders between Poga\u010dar and Vingegaard to trigger separate time splits.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under UCI regulations, riders must be separated by at least three seconds for time gaps to be assigned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were riders everywhere, so you didn\u2019t have 3-second gaps,\u201d Reef told <em>Sporza<\/em>. \u201cThere were about 10 seconds between Poga\u010dar and Jonas, but with riders in between, then everyone is put in the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visma dodged a bullet in more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard and Poga\u010dar were both credited with the same time at 14 seconds behind stage winner Olav Kooij.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard remains tied on time with Poga\u010dar heading into Thursday\u2019s first major mountain showdown over the Col du Tourmalet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"mb-base-loose flex flex-wrap gap-(--spacing-base)\">\n<div class=\"fp-remove flex items-center justify-start gap-(--spacing-base-tight)\"><span class=\"font-utility-2 font-bold text-primary\">Andrew Hood<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pub-date font-utility-2 text-secondary\">Published July 8, 2026 01:23PM<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[analyse_source url=&#8221;https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/tour-de-france\/race-jury-saves-vingegaard-from-tour-de-france-time-loss-after-crash-mayhem\/&#8221;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221;
