A 34-year-old Czech mountaineer was killed Tuesday morning after being struck by rockfall high on the north face of Liskamm, one of the Alps\u2019 most demanding 4,000-meter peaks, above Zermatt, Switzerland. <\/strong>According to the Valais Cantonal Police, the accident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. on July 7 while two climbers were ascending the north side of Liskamm at approximately 4,300 metres (14,108 feet). The pair were caught in a rockfall at that elevation. One of the climbers was struck and sustained fatal injuries.<\/p>\n

His climbing partner immediately alerted emergency services.<\/strong> Rescuers from the Kantonale Walliser Rettungsorganisation were flown to the scene aboard an Air Zermatt helicopter but were only able to confirm the climber\u2019s death on arrival. The victim has been identified as a 34-year-old Czech national. No further details have been released pending formal identification and notification of family members. The Valais public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.<\/p>\n
