across the glossy pages of a magazine, blown-up in ads on city billboards or scrolled past in curated Instagram carousels. But in <em>Model Check-In<\/em>, top model and tech writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nassia_\">Nassia Matsa<\/a> turns the camera around, creating an archive of her experience behind the scenes in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The project comes from Matsa\u2019s own unconventional route into the modelling world. Before becoming a full-time model, the Athens-born, London-based creative was working as a writer on technology and culture, having already completed two master\u2019s degrees. After being scouted as a club kid, her career quickly grew into campaigns for countless high fashion brands<\/span><span>, global runway shows and<\/span><span>\u00a0over 200 shoots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Assembling images from the beginning of her career in 2017 up until the present, the project began as a way of documenting a world that at first felt surreal. Transitioning from a traditional 9-5 into modelling, Matsa found herself caught up in a whirlwind of different locations, long haul flights and endless fittings. \u201cIt felt like an out of body experience at first,\u201d she says. \u201cI was part of the diversity wave, so it never occurred to me that this could be my everyday life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"500032cc-dc0b-45ae-976f-b48100aaec21\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449414.JPG\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.33\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nassia Matsa \" class=\"img\" height=\"1932\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449414.JPG\" width=\"2576\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Nassia<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>The duality of her role as both model and journalist underpins the creation of <em>Model Check-In<\/em><span>. \u201cAs a journalist I got access to sets that press is not allowed [to see],\u201d she explains. \u201cAnd as a model I got to have that journalistic eye of how to create a story and peel off the glamour.\u201d While the project began as a personal documentation, it eventually became a way of taking control of how the world around her was recorded. \u201cUsually they take pictures of me, so this is an archive of what I see when I am on set.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The project features candid photographs of airport pickup signs, ornage sunsets through plane windows, runway call sheets, bruised knees, cheap hotel breakfasts and make-up touchups. \u201cWe manufacture a fantasy in fashion where everything is curated from the beginning to the end of the process,\u201d she says, pointing to the set, makeup, poses, editing and final placement of the images that reach us. \u201cI tend to prefer unedited pictures with no Photoshop, so this was my way of documenting that fantasy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"83937f3a-bd76-46e0-97fd-b48100ab7a31\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449417.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.75\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nassia Matsa \" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449417.jpg\" width=\"2250\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Nassia<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Alongside the glamour of it all, the project captures the less polished realities of modelling. While editing the images, Matsa noticed something she hadn\u2019t expected: the physical toll of modelling on her body. \u201cI thought I was complaining a lot that my feet hurt but in retrospect I saw why.\u201d The photographs show bruised legs, skin-deep imprints from garments and the burnt out aftermath of long days on set. \u201cBefore I started modelling I thought that they dress you, they paint you and off you go,\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t realise how much physical pain was involved in the process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rather than turning the project into a traditional photobook, Matsa chose to present <em>Model Check-In<\/em> as a small bag charm. Explaining this choice, she references Lucian Freud\u2019s <\/span><em><span>Her Majesty the Queen<\/span><\/em><span> painting: \u201cYou think it\u2019d be on a big glorious canvas with gold framing but actually it\u2019s tiny and closer to A5 measurements. It plays on the belief in art that if you want to make something dramatic, go big. But in <em>Model Check-In<\/em>, top model and tech writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nassia_\">Nassia Matsa<\/a> turns the camera around, creating an archive of her experience behind the scenes in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The project comes from Matsa\u2019s own unconventional route into the modelling world. Before becoming a full-time model, the Athens-born, London-based creative was working as a writer on technology and culture, having already completed two master\u2019s degrees. After being scouted as a club kid, her career quickly grew into campaigns for countless high fashion brands<\/span><span>, global runway shows and<\/span><span>\u00a0over 200 shoots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Assembling images from the beginning of her career in 2017 up until the present, the project began as a way of documenting a world that at first felt surreal. Transitioning from a traditional 9-5 into modelling, Matsa found herself caught up in a whirlwind of different locations, long haul flights and endless fittings. \u201cIt felt like an out of body experience at first,\u201d she says. \u201cI was part of the diversity wave, so it never occurred to me that this could be my everyday life.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"500032cc-dc0b-45ae-976f-b48100aaec21\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449414.JPG\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"1.33\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"landscape\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nassia Matsa \" class=\"img\" height=\"1932\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449414.JPG\" width=\"2576\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Nassia<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p>The duality of her role as both model and journalist underpins the creation of <em>Model Check-In<\/em><span>. \u201cAs a journalist I got access to sets that press is not allowed [to see],\u201d she explains. \u201cAnd as a model I got to have that journalistic eye of how to create a story and peel off the glamour.\u201d While the project began as a personal documentation, it eventually became a way of taking control of how the world around her was recorded. \u201cUsually they take pictures of me, so this is an archive of what I see when I am on set.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The project features candid photographs of airport pickup signs, ornage sunsets through plane windows, runway call sheets, bruised knees, cheap hotel breakfasts and make-up touchups. \u201cWe manufacture a fantasy in fashion where everything is curated from the beginning to the end of the process,\u201d she says, pointing to the set, makeup, poses, editing and final placement of the images that reach us. \u201cI tend to prefer unedited pictures with no Photoshop, so this was my way of documenting that fantasy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"inline-img expandable dev-view-hide\" data-img=\"83937f3a-bd76-46e0-97fd-b48100ab7a31\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/2000\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449417.jpg\" data-img-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\" data-img-aspect-ratio=\"0.75\"><span class=\"has-css-custom-props image-container\" data-aspect-ratio-type=\"portrait\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nassia Matsa \" class=\"img\" height=\"3000\" src=\"https:\/\/images-prod.dazeddigital.com\/786\/azure\/dazed-prod\/1440\/9\/1449417.jpg\" width=\"2250\"><\/span><\/span><figcaption class=\"img-caption\"><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Nassia<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>Alongside the glamour of it all, the project captures the less polished realities of modelling. While editing the images, Matsa noticed something she hadn\u2019t expected: the physical toll of modelling on her body. \u201cI thought I was complaining a lot that my feet hurt but in retrospect I saw why.\u201d The photographs show bruised legs, skin-deep imprints from garments and the burnt out aftermath of long days on set. \u201cBefore I started modelling I thought that they dress you, they paint you and off you go,\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t realise how much physical pain was involved in the process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rather than turning the project into a traditional photobook, Matsa chose to present <em>Model Check-In<\/em> as a small bag charm. Explaining this choice, she references Lucian Freud\u2019s <\/span><em><span>Her Majesty the Queen<\/span><\/em><span> painting: \u201cYou think it\u2019d be on a big glorious canvas with gold framing but actually it\u2019s tiny and closer to A5 measurements. It plays on the belief in art that if you want to make something dramatic, go big.
