The London chapter of the New York\u2013founded\u00a0Artist Pension Trust (APT)<\/strong>\u00a0is shuttering, and now participating artists claim the trust that promised a \u201cmutual assurance program\u201d by pooling and selling their art is in fact \u201cunlawful,\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0Financial Times\u00a0<\/em>reported. Over 40 artists allege\u00a0APT London Inc<\/strong>\u00a0has likely been operating as an unregulated investment scheme, and they are now demanding all of their artwork be returned, along with compensation for any financial losses incurred. As\u00a0ARTnews<\/em>\u00a0reported\u00a0in 2009, APT was presented as \u201ca pension program for contemporary artists,\u201d to which participants would contribute art instead of money, over 20 years. But even in that 2009 story, the multi-investor-supported program meant to pay artists upon art sales was characterized as \u201cspeculative\u201d by private art dealer\u00a0Clarissa Dalrymple<\/strong>, who told\u00a0ARTnews<\/em>\u00a0\u201cthere is no way to know if it really will work.\u201d For impacted UK artists, it seems that time has come. Three of them told the\u00a0FT<\/em>\u00a0they had not received any money from APT, ever. Things took a turn for the worse after the London branch announced its plans to close in May, and sent a termination agreement asking artists to retrieve works worth 70 percent of their contributions. The remaining 30 percent of artworks would be kept by APT to pay outstanding expenses. That offer was \u201ca betrayal on an epic scale,\u201d said artist\u00a0C\u00e9line Condorelli<\/strong>. Meanwhile, the UK\u2019s Financial Conduct Authority has not been regulating the company, which is run from outside the UK. According to\u00a0Guillermo Malm Green<\/strong>, a lawyer administering APT\u2019s closure, APT is currently owned by \u201ca large number of distributed shareholders,\u201d excluding APT co-founder and tech entrepreneur\u00a0Moti Shniberg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n IN MEMORIAM<\/strong>.\u00a0Richard H. Glanton<\/strong>, who headed the\u00a0Barnes Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0in the 1990s, has died at 79, reports the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>. Glanton is remembered for pushing against opposition and taking the Foundation\u2019s 80 French artworks on an exhibition tour to raise money for a museum renovation, as well as his \u201ccombative\u201d approach that helped bring visibility to the Philadelphia institution. Glanton did not have a background in art and joined the institution\u2019s board through his relationship to Lincoln University, a historically Black college about an hour outside Philadelphia that had close ties to the collection\u2019s founder,\u00a0Albert C. Barnes<\/strong>. For\u00a0Ocula<\/em>, the poet\u00a0Will Harris<\/strong>\u00a0talks\u00a0to Stockholm-based artist\u00a0Lap-See Lam<\/strong>\u00a0on the occasion of her \u201cwatery\u201d exhibition, \u201cOmbres,\u201d at Norway\u2019s\u00a0Henie Onstad Kunstsenter<\/strong>, which is located in an area that is itself largely surrounded by water.\u00a0The winner of the 2025\u00a0Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award<\/strong>, Lam is showing recent video works, such as\u00a0Floating Sea Palace<\/em>\u00a0(2025), featuring Chinese opera and a \u201cdragon ship.\u201d Another work,\u00a0Mother\u2019s Tongue<\/em>\u00a0(2018), focuses on the family\u2019s Chinese restaurant, where Lam spent much of her childhood, via perspectives of fictional restaurant workers from 1978, 2018, and 2058. \u201cWith the Chinese restaurant, I always found its duality interesting. It\u2019s a projection of Chineseness, a place catering to a Western gaze \u2014 and, of course, one can point that out and reject it. But it\u2019s also a real place where a lot of important unwritten history is being played out in relation to the diaspora and everyday life.
