class="post-summary__body">

The Los Angeles Lakers officially allowed the contract deadline to pass, making Bronny James’ $2.3 million salary for the 2026-27 season fully guaranteed

Less than 24 hours later, LeBron James officially notified the Lakers that he is opting out to sign with a new franchise for his 24th NBA season

Analysts point to a calculated sequence of timing, with LeBron ensuring his son’s financial security before revealing his own free agency departure

The Los Angeles Lakers‘ front office was hit with a sequence of whiplash-inducing roster developments over a frantic 24-hour window. On Monday, June 29, 2026, the organization officially committed to keeping 21-year-old guard Bronny James by allowing his $2.29 million USD contract for the upcoming season to become fully guaranteed. However, any internal optimism regarding family ties holding the roster together evaporated on Tuesday morning, when NBA insider Shams Charania revealed that LeBron James is leaving Los Angeles to test the open market—completely reshaping the context of his son’s roster spot.

The timing of the twin announcements has drawn intense speculation from across the basketball world. Insiders now view the sequence as a masterfully choreographed parting gift from LeBron. Out of courtesy and appreciation for his eight-year tenure in purple and gold, the four-time MVP waited until his son’s third-season finances were legally locked in with Los Angeles before having Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul break the news to Rob Pelinka that he would be wearing a different uniform next year.

While the elder James prepares to choose between high-profile suitors like the Golden State Warriors and the Miami Heat, the focus in Southern California shifts heavily toward Bronny’s independent value as an NBA asset. Drafted 55th overall in 2024 amid claims of pure nepotism, the young guard quieted critics during the 2025-26 campaign by flashing tangible developmental strides under head coach JJ Redick. Splitting time between the main roster and the G League’s South Bay Lakers, Bronny appeared in 50 NBA games, averaging 2.7 points and 1.1 assists in limited action while flashing high-upside 3-and-D potential. Crucially, he knocked down 38.1% of his attempts from beyond the arc and earned trustworthy backup minutes during the Lakers’ postseason series against the Houston Rockets.

With LeBron officially heading out the door, the Lakers find themselves at a structural crossroads regarding how to manage Bronny’s remaining contract. Because his cap hit sits virtually at the league minimum, keeping the young guard to continue his backcourt development is a highly cost-effective option for a team rebuilding around Austin Reaves and a newly freed $52 million cap space cache. Conversely, league executives are already asking whether Pelinka will look to package Bronny in a secondary trade later this summer—potentially sending him to whichever market his father ultimately selects to ensure the James family reunion continues out of house.

Bronny James’ contract with the Los Angeles Lakers became fully guaranteed for $2.3M yesterday.

— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) June 30, 2026

Related Stories

                                                                            >Jaylen Brown Breaks Silence on Shocking Trade to Rival 76ers

                                                                            >Lando Norris Welcomes Rumors of Max Verstappen Moving to McLaren Ahead of British Grand Prix

                                                                            >Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 Tournament Will Be His Final World Cup

We got you covered. class="post-summary__body">

We got you covered. allowed the contract deadline to pass, making Bronny James’ $2.3 million salary for the 2026-27 season fully guaranteed

Text By

        Joyce Li

    NBALos Angeles LakersBronny James

[analyse_source url=”https://hypebeast.com/2026/6/nba-los-angeles-lakers-guarantee-bronny-james-contract-following-lebron-exit”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://image-cdn.hypb.st/https%3A%2F%2Fhypebeast.com%2Fimage%2F2026%2F06%2F30%2Fnba-los-angeles-lakers-guarantee-bronny-james-contract-following-lebron-exit-tw.jpg?w=1080&cbr=1&q=90&fit=max”] Sports Jun 30, 2026 17.8K Views 1 Comments Comments Save Text By Joyce Li Share this article Kenneth Richmond/Getty Images Sports Jun 30, 2026 17.8K Views 1 Comments Comments Save Summary The Los Angeles Lakers officially allowed the contract deadline to pass, making Bronny James’ $2.3 million salary for the 2026-27 season fully guaranteed […]

[2
226,39
post-2028606","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","tag-crawlmanager","tag-hypebeast-com
["GET
