The backlash against Miller\u2014who had previously vowed not to intervene in the exhibition\u2014comes as a Jewish trustee of the museum resigned and museums worldwide grapple with the framing of Israel\u2019s ongoing military assault on Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tMiller told the Canadian Press on Monday that it was \u201cregrettable\u201d the curators of
\u201cPalestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present\u201d did not \u201cidentify Hamas as a terrorist organization\u201d or mention the Jews killed during Hamas\u2019 7 October attack on Israel. He added that he was \u201csurprised\u201d by reports that the museum\u2019s board had not reviewed the exhibition before it opened, describing the alleged oversight as \u201can error in governance.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tResponding to Miller\u2019s comments, a spokesperson for the Museum for Human Rights told Ocula<\/em> that his concerns would be addressed through the museum\u2019s \u201cestablished content revision process.\u201d The spokesperson added that the museum has referred to Hamas\u2019s October 7 attack as terrorism \u201con numerous occasions\u201d and had been transparent with the museum\u2019s board about the exhibition\u2019s content throughout its development.<\/p>\n \n\tThe exhibition, which opened to the public on Saturday, centers on the displacement and dispossession of approximately 750,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which followed the partition of Palestine and the establishment of the State of Israel\u2014an event known in Arabic as al-Nakba<\/em>, or \u201cthe catastrophe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tThe exhibition\u2019s website says the show explores \u201cthe human rights violations related to the ongoing forced displacement and dispossession of Palestinians\u201d through \u201cpersonal stories\u201d shared by Palestinian Canadians. Together, the video testimonies, photography, visual art, and text \u201creveal enduring patterns of loss and resistance,\u201d according to the website, which adds that the exhibition was developed in collaboration with an advisory network of scholars.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tThe exhibition, however, has been a source of controversy since the state-funded museum announced it in late 2025. In May, an Israeli legal organization threatened the museum with litigation over the show\u2019s alleged use of federal funds to \u201cpoliticize\u201d history and potentially fuel \u201chostility against the Jewish community.\u201d The museum\u2019s sole Jewish trustee, Mark L. Berlin, a professor at McGill University, resigned from the board on June 22. In an op-ed published by The Hub<\/a><\/em>, Berlin accused the museum of\u00a0\u201cintellectual dishonesty\u201d and called Palestine Uprooted and <\/em>\u201cincomplete exhibition\u201d \u00a0that will \u201cinevitably promote a one-sided, unbalanced interpretation of Israeli history, Zionism, and the Arab-Israeli conflict\u201d. The exhibition\u2019s opening five days later drew a pro-Israel demonstration outside the institution.<\/p>\n \n\tJewish organizations elsewhere have voiced support for the exhibition. Last week, the Independent Jewish Voices Canada, the Jewish Faculty Network, and the United Jewish People\u2019s Order Canada jointly published an open letter titled Dear Museum, with Love<\/em>, praising the museum for its \u201ccommitment to this exhibition and continuing to tell the stories of marginalized communities.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe letter continued: \u201cDespite significant pressure and attempts to challenge or undermine its inclusion, the museum has remained committed to presenting Palestinian perspectives and engaging the public by sharing their experiences, histories and ongoing realities.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tIn comments to local media ahead of the exhibition\u2019s opening, the museum\u2019s chief executive, Isha Khan, defended its framing of the 1948 Palestinian displacement and its historical legacy. \u201cI think people want to see this work as a binary, as one side versus the other, and it isn\u2019t,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s human rights work.
