Previously, she was a writer and editor at MUO.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"zephr-anchor\" class=\"_1044qiz13\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The man whose Tesla struck and killed a woman inside her Texas home last month is now facing manslaughter charges, as reported earlier by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/driver-charged-with-manslaughter-after-tesla-crashed-into-texas-home-killing-woman-inside-65e17279?mod=rss_Technology\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> and local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/deadly-tesla-home-crash-suspect-charged\/285-1c2b6416-6f43-4bb0-a490-ba8dc1d9c143\">news outlet KHOU 11<\/a>. 44-year-old Michael Butler was arrested on Wednesday and claimed to have been driving his Model 3 using Tesla\u2019s Full-Self Driving (FSD) system at the time of the crash, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/28405676-texas-v-michael-butlerpdf\/\">according to an arrest affidavit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The court document includes the officer saying that data extraction from Butler\u2019s phone found several FSD-related Google searches from May 2026: \u201cTesla fsd not aggressive enough 2026 model,\u201d \u201ctesla fsdnot [sic] aggressive enough 2026,\u201d \u201ctesla fsdnot [sic] aggressive enough,\u201d \u201cFSD is not aggressive enough for city driving,\u201d \u201ctesla fsdnot [sic] aggressive enough,\u201d and \u201ctesla fsd too timid.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">On June 19th, 76-year-old Martha Avila was killed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/1-person-killed-tesla-autopilot-crashes-texas-home-rcna350982\">after Butler\u2019s vehicle plowed<\/a> through her home in a residential neighborhood in Katy, Texas. Tesla AI head Ashok Elluswamy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aelluswamy\/status\/2069168079549161491\">responded shortly after in a tweet<\/a>, saying the driver \u201cmanually overrode self-driving by pressing the accelerator all the way to 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Avila\u2019s family <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/family-sues-tesla-after-woman-killed-vehicle-allegedly\/story?id=134175470\">has filed a wrongful death lawsuit<\/a> against Tesla and Butler, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/jun\/24\/texas-tesla-car-crash-investigation\">both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened investigations into the crash.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The affidavit says Butler told paramedics that \u201cthe car was on \u2018autopilot,\u2019\u201d adding that \u201che remembers changing the music\u2026 (and) looked at the navigation screen\u201d before the fatal collision while making deliveries for DoorDash. He also told hospital providers that he \u201cremembers putting the car in self driving mode\u201d and that he \u201cpassed out,\u201d according to the affidavit. An evaluation from the hospital didn\u2019t find alcohol or drugs in Butler\u2019s system, the affidavit says<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">After reviewing video from Butler\u2019s Model 3, along with data from the vehicle\u2019s \u201cblack box,\u201d officials said they found that the \u201caccelerator pedal was pressed, overriding FSD\u2019s speed control:\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote _1lkuyz80 _19wv7tc9\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1lkuyz88 _19wv7tc1\">On the video, I saw BUTLER\u2019s Tesla continue to increase in speed, and saw the amount of pressure being applied to the accelerator pedal also increase in speed. In about six (6) seconds, the accelerator pedal was pressed all the way down to 100%, \u201cpedal to the metal,\u201d and the vehicle reached a speed of 73 miles per hour, more than double the speed limit on that residential street. The Tesla continued straight towards the middle of the cul-de-sac, struck the curb of the complainant\u2019s driveway, and went airborne towards the front of the home\u2026 I noted that the brake
