\n\tThe National Museum Cardiff\u00a0in Wales may close for much-needed repair work, according to a workers\u2019 union claim that it is in early discussions about a temporary closure in the wake of work last year to address what the institution\u2019s director general described as the building\u2019s \u201cdeteriorating condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tAs reported by the BBC, \u201cThe Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) said it understands that Amgueddfa Cymru, which runs the site, is \u2018considering the possibility\u2019 of temporary closure but that \u2018no final decisions have been made.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe union told the BBC that the talks related to \u201cthe impact on staff, the protection of collections and the future operation of the museum\u201d after rumors on social media led to questions about the museum\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
\n\tIn a statement, Amgueddfa Cymru chief executive Jane Richardson described maintenance on the building as \u201can ongoing challenge.\u201d A press release issued by the group said a design team has been appointed as a \u201cfirst step towards plans to ensure the Museum\u2014which is approaching its centenary in 2027\u2014is fit for purpose for the future.\u201d Among the needed repairs are work on the building\u2019s roof as well as the installation of a new fire alarm system.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cOur ambition is\u00a0to create a\u00a0distinctively Welsh National Museum and Gallery\u00a0with inspiring, modern,\u00a0sustainable\u00a0and accessible spaces for everyone to enjoy,\u201d said Richardson.\u00a0\u201cThese are ambitious plans, but we believe this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a vibrant\u00a0cultural destination\u00a0in Cardiff\u00a0that drives economic growth and\u00a0connects us to the world through stories and collaborations that matter locally and globally.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe National Museum Cardiff is home to Wales\u2019s national art, geology and natural history collections, with notable holdings of Impressionist paintings and temporary exhibitions such as \u201cFfasiwn,\u201d a show related to \u201ca socially engaged, anti-fashion photography project\u201d by artists Cl\u00e9mentine Schneidermann and Charlotte James and young people in Wales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
