Buy a copy of the magazine <\/span><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boutiquemags.com\/dazed.html\"><em><span>here<\/span><\/em><\/a><em><span>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a spiritual connection between 00s emo rock bands like My Chemical Romance and the midwestern hyperpop of artists like Glaive over two decades later \u2013 a sort of fatalistic teenage angst that froths over into maximalist instrumentation. Transplant these energies into Japan and you get Osakan singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_swe2ty_\/?hl=en\">Swetty\u2019s<\/a> 2023 debut single \u201cjunkie\u201d, an explosive lament of unrequited love that catapulted him to internet fame overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHonestly, I didn\u2019t really think it would be that successful,\u201d the heavy-hearted singer tells Dazed over email. \u201cI first uploaded it to SoundCloud, and even then, I wondered if I should even post it. Surprisingly, a lot of people listened to it, so without thinking too much about it, I uploaded \u2018Junkie\u2019 to streaming services. I\u2019m truly grateful that this is how it turned out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But while the deep-seated emotions that underpinned these early releases proved wildly relatable, they also dogged Swetty behind the scenes, leading him to disappear from music completely in 2025. \u201cI was despairing over my own incompleteness,\u201d Swetty says of this period with characteristic melancholy. \u201cI was confused by the gap between how I saw myself and how the numbers made me appear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"8W8zm4XUrRs\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8W8zm4XUrRs\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In recent months, however, Swetty has started to tame the visceral anxieties that made his music so compelling to begin with, and last week returned with his long-awaited debut album, <em>the white room in my head<\/em>. Following a foray into autotune alongside Japanese hyperpop heavyweight Keg\u00f8n on recent single \u201cNo Damage\u201d, it marks something of an artistic rebirth for the singer, leaning deeper into the electronic pop end of his artistry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOver the past year or two, I\u2019ve made more friends and started listening to genres I hadn\u2019t listened to before,\u201d says Swetty of this shift. \u201cI don\u2019t know if this change is good or bad, but this is who I am, so I\u2019m releasing songs without holding back, doing what I like right now.\u201d Clearly, this crippling self-doubt isn\u2019t going away, but it\u2019s equally clear that, once Swetty learns to live with these dark emotions, he\u2019ll be unstoppable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Below, in his first English-language interview, the newly reborn electronic pop artist unpacks his long-awaited return to releasing new music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What sorts of feelings and artists inspired you to start making music?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty:<\/strong><span> I used to skateboard, and I was influenced by the music my seniors were playing back then, which made me want to try it myself. At first, I liked hip-hop, so I was doing hip-hop, but gradually I started to feel like I couldn\u2019t really make that my own, so I shifted to rock and hyperpop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did your artist name come from?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>I was thinking of an artist name, fell asleep with the Notes app on my iPhone open, and when I woke up, \u201cswetty\u201d was written there, so I went with swetty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most of your single artworks depict similar themes \u2013 empty cityscapes and country roads at dusk. What about these images inspires you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>Most of the photos were taken during walks I took while writing the songs, so there\u2019s no specific meaning behind them. Did you struggle with fitting in growing up?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty:\u00a0 <\/strong><span>I\u2019ve recently realized that things I took for granted aren\u2019t actually the norm for everyone, so I think there was a bit of a disconnect. However, since there were many warm-hearted people around me, I didn\u2019t have any particular trouble fitting in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I don\u2019t remember this myself, but <\/span><span>apparently, whenever I went to the park, I wouldn\u2019t play with the other kids \u2013 I\u2019d just dig endlessly in the moss and dirt in the cracks of the park tiles or dig in the sandbox the whole time. People were often worried about me, so maybe I was struggling without even realizing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>I made this album by imagining what kind of music I would create if I were in that white room I used to picture when I closed my eyes during tough times.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You seemed to take a little break from music between 2025 and 2026. What were you up to during that time?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>My creative direction kept shifting. I had actually finished an album, but I decided it wasn\u2019t what I truly wanted to do, so I scrapped it. I thought that if I was going to do what I really wanted, I had to make my own beats, so I started working on them. But it took way too long, so I ended up asking people I trust and artists I admire for help, and finally managed to complete the album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What can you tell us about the new album?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty:<\/strong><span> I want to truly capture who I am right now. Even though my current mindset and the music I love will remain, they\u2019re definitely fading and being overwritten by something else. So, even if I later feel like this was a mistake, I wanted to preserve what I love right now in a tangible form so I won\u2019t forget it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I made this album by imagining what kind of music I would create if I were in that white room I used to picture when I closed my eyes during tough times. It incorporates various genres, but it\u2019s primarily electronic pop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If an alien came to Earth, what three albums would you recommend to them?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>There are so many great songs in the world that this is really hard, and since I don\u2019t know what kind of music aliens would like, it\u2019s a real dilemma. Transplant these energies into Japan and you get Osakan singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_swe2ty_\/?hl=en\">Swetty\u2019s<\/a> 2023 debut single \u201cjunkie\u201d, an explosive lament of unrequited love that catapulted him to internet fame overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHonestly, I didn\u2019t really think it would be that successful,\u201d the heavy-hearted singer tells Dazed over email. \u201cI first uploaded it to SoundCloud, and even then, I wondered if I should even post it. Surprisingly, a lot of people listened to it, so without thinking too much about it, I uploaded \u2018Junkie\u2019 to streaming services. I\u2019m truly grateful that this is how it turned out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But while the deep-seated emotions that underpinned these early releases proved wildly relatable, they also dogged Swetty behind the scenes, leading him to disappear from music completely in 2025. \u201cI was despairing over my own incompleteness,\u201d Swetty says of this period with characteristic melancholy. \u201cI was confused by the gap between how I saw myself and how the numbers made me appear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-youtube video-container embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"media-youtube\" data-id=\"8W8zm4XUrRs\"><span class=\"preserve-aspect-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen frameborder height=\"422\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8W8zm4XUrRs\" webkitallowfullscreen width=\"750\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-content\" data-embed-type=\"raw-html\">\n<p><span>In recent months, however, Swetty has started to tame the visceral anxieties that made his music so compelling to begin with, and last week returned with his long-awaited debut album, <em>the white room in my head<\/em>. Following a foray into autotune alongside Japanese hyperpop heavyweight Keg\u00f8n on recent single \u201cNo Damage\u201d, it marks something of an artistic rebirth for the singer, leaning deeper into the electronic pop end of his artistry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOver the past year or two, I\u2019ve made more friends and started listening to genres I hadn\u2019t listened to before,\u201d says Swetty of this shift. \u201cI don\u2019t know if this change is good or bad, but this is who I am, so I\u2019m releasing songs without holding back, doing what I like right now.\u201d Clearly, this crippling self-doubt isn\u2019t going away, but it\u2019s equally clear that, once Swetty learns to live with these dark emotions, he\u2019ll be unstoppable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Below, in his first English-language interview, the newly reborn electronic pop artist unpacks his long-awaited return to releasing new music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What sorts of feelings and artists inspired you to start making music?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty:<\/strong><span> I used to skateboard, and I was influenced by the music my seniors were playing back then, which made me want to try it myself. At first, I liked hip-hop, so I was doing hip-hop, but gradually I started to feel like I couldn\u2019t really make that my own, so I shifted to rock and hyperpop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where did your artist name come from?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>I was thinking of an artist name, fell asleep with the Notes app on my iPhone open, and when I woke up, \u201cswetty\u201d was written there, so I went with swetty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most of your single artworks depict similar themes \u2013 empty cityscapes and country roads at dusk. What about these images inspires you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>Most of the photos were taken during walks I took while writing the songs, so there\u2019s no specific meaning behind them. Did you struggle with fitting in growing up?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty:\u00a0 <\/strong><span>I\u2019ve recently realized that things I took for granted aren\u2019t actually the norm for everyone, so I think there was a bit of a disconnect. However, since there were many warm-hearted people around me, I didn\u2019t have any particular trouble fitting in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I don\u2019t remember this myself, but <\/span><span>apparently, whenever I went to the park, I wouldn\u2019t play with the other kids \u2013 I\u2019d just dig endlessly in the moss and dirt in the cracks of the park tiles or dig in the sandbox the whole time. People were often worried about me, so maybe I was struggling without even realizing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>I made this album by imagining what kind of music I would create if I were in that white room I used to picture when I closed my eyes during tough times.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You seemed to take a little break from music between 2025 and 2026. What were you up to during that time?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>My creative direction kept shifting. I had actually finished an album, but I decided it wasn\u2019t what I truly wanted to do, so I scrapped it. I thought that if I was going to do what I really wanted, I had to make my own beats, so I started working on them. But it took way too long, so I ended up asking people I trust and artists I admire for help, and finally managed to complete the album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What can you tell us about the new album?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty:<\/strong><span> I want to truly capture who I am right now. Even though my current mindset and the music I love will remain, they\u2019re definitely fading and being overwritten by something else. So, even if I later feel like this was a mistake, I wanted to preserve what I love right now in a tangible form so I won\u2019t forget it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I made this album by imagining what kind of music I would create if I were in that white room I used to picture when I closed my eyes during tough times. It incorporates various genres, but it\u2019s primarily electronic pop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If an alien came to Earth, what three albums would you recommend to them?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Swetty: <\/strong><span>There are so many great songs in the world that this is really hard, and since I don\u2019t know what kind of music aliens would like, it\u2019s a real dilemma.
