Early-season operations remain mixed, with limited lift-served terrain at several open resorts and some areas still waiting on enough cover, so this is as much a base-building storm as a powder chase.

Tuesday into Wednesday stays mostly mild and very windy before the snow arrives from the west and southwest Wednesday evening. The individual models converge on the broad timing, with precipitation building Wednesday night, a first snowy push Thursday, and the main colder burst Thursday night into Friday. They also agree that snow levels start marginal, generally around 1,500-1,800 meters during the early precipitation, then fall toward 800-1,300 meters by Friday as colder air arrives. Snow quality starts very wet and dense, with SLRs near 2-5 early, then improves to dense to fair snow with SLRs around 6-9 during the Friday peak.

Confidence is strongest from Wednesday evening, July 1, through early Saturday, July 4, when the storm is well sampled and the individual models are clustered on timing. Intensity still has moderate spread, especially between the higher NSW/Victorian alpine terrain and the lower or warmer resorts, but the published totals for that period show the main resorts in the 16-32 cm tier, with Charlotte Pass and Falls Creek near 25-38 cm. Winds are a meaningful part of the ski weather: the models consistently show strong exposed-ridge winds, though peak gusts vary, and gusts over 100 km/h are plausible during the storm. That will make Friday the snowiest day, but not necessarily the easiest lift-served day where operations are already limited or wind-sensitive.

Saturday morning should taper to lingering flurries, then the pattern turns quieter for most of Sunday through Friday, July 10. The individual models converge on much lighter precipitation during that stretch, with colder nights early, modest daytime recovery, and less consistent wind impacts after the storm exits. The next signal shows up around Saturday, July 11, through Tuesday, July 14, but the models diverge more on timing, intensity, snow levels, and wind. A conservative read is another light to moderate alpine refresh, roughly 5-20 cm for favored higher terrain if the wetter solutions verify, but that is outside the period where snowfall details are reliable enough for committed resort totals.

    @media (max-width:600px) {
#sb-newsletter { padding:18px 20px 14px !important; }
#sb-newsletter h3 { font-size:14px !important; white-space:nowrap; }
#sb-newsletter .sb-body { font-size:12px !important; margin-bottom:8px !important; }
#sb-newsletter .sb-proof { font-size:11px !important; }
#sb-newsletter .sb-form-row { flex-wrap:nowrap !important; }
#sb-newsletter .sb-form-row input { font-size:12px !important; padding:9px 10px !important; }
#sb-newsletter .sb-form-row button { font-size:12px !important; padding:9px 12px !important; }
}

SnowBrains Newsletter

The snowsports journalism skiers trust.

Award-winning journalism, resort reports, powder forecasts and industry deep dives from the world’s largest independent snowsports outlet.

Join thousands of snow lovers.

      Subscribe free →

No spam.
