SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 Mike Dunleavy left himself some wiggle room before the NBA Draft that helps explain why the speculation about the Golden State Warriors adding two future Hall of Famers is suddenly gaining steam.<\/p>\n

When asked directly if the organization would be comfortable getting older this summer, the Warriors general manager offered a glimpse into the thinking that could shape the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve got to look at it,\u201d Dunleavy said on June 17. \u201cIt\u2019s a sliding scale. We\u2019re OK with we\u2019re going to get older. Frankly, it\u2019s not the best thing, but if it\u2019s going to make us better, like significantly better, I think we have to look at that, because that\u2019s really our thought process and job right now is to make this team better. If it means doing older, then we\u2019ll do it, but that\u2019s pretty unlikely. There\u2019s only so many guys I feel like we could bring in that are older. We\u2019ve got some guys on the back end of it already, and to add to that there would definitely be some risk. Maybe there\u2019s a situation we do that and go for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I mean, we obviously would prefer to get younger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twelve days later, after Draymond Green officially opted out of his nearly $28 million player option, the intrigue around whether LeBron James and Anthony Davis could pair up together again, this time with Stephen Curry and Green in Golden State, has grown even louder. Green\u2019s decision allows the Warriors more time to explore all of their options. As Dunleavy does, he would be wise to remember his own words.<\/p>\n

The way that this is gonna play out now is he’s gonna take a little time off. He’s gonna, you know, talk to his family, talk to his confidants, talk to his team, look at the options, and, and my guess is that he will not. Announce, yes, I’m, I intend on playing next season, um, because, quite frankly, he’s not a restricted free agent. He doesn’t know what the offers are. He doesn’t know what his options are yet. A more realistic thing would be, you know, if he does want to play next season, um, or he thinks he wants to, to test his body and get ready. But then to take a series of free agency meetings, talk to teams, figure out, um, what he’s willing to accept, figure out what’s out there for him. Um, we know, you know, there are only a handful of cap space teams available, um, the Lakers being one of them. There are the Brooklyn Nets, there are the Chicago Bulls. Neither of those teams, um, is in Los Angeles or ready to win. So I think he’s gonna consider some other teams. He’s gonna consider options where he feels like he can win a championship. But look, I think for a long time, he’s had options to go elsewhere, and he’s decided to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers. Um, the question becomes, what are the Lakers willing to offer him? Rob Plinka and JJ Reddick, but particularly Rob Plinka made it clear that while they want LeBron James, um, they would love to have him finish his career with the Lakers. You know, that, that’s not priority number one for them this offseason. Priority number one is to build around Lukadancic. And I think that they need, uh, a rim-running center. They need more athleticism on the wings, and they would love to fit LeBron James into that plan.
