This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Red Bull Rampage<\/a> mountain bike freeride competition, and Singletracks has learned the event is seeking a return to its original site. A June 26 announcement<\/a> posted to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) seeks \u201cpublic comments on a Special Recreation Permit application from H5 Events, Inc.,\u202fto hold the Red Bull Rampage mountain bike competition on public lands\u202fnear Virgin in Washington County.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rampage was held at the site, located outside Virgin, Utah, and just a few miles west of Zion National Park, from 2001 to 2004. In those early years of the event, there were no man-made features, with a focus on finding creative ways to ride the challenging and stark natural terrain. This Red Bull video<\/a>, narrated by Kyle Strait, who competed in the first Rampage and won in 2004 and 2013, provides an excellent historical look at the site.<\/p>\n

Following the 2004 competition, organizers spent three years looking for a new venue where wooden features could be added. In 2008, Rampage returned, this time on Utah Trust Lands. The event moved to another southwestern Utah site in 2016.<\/p>\n

A preliminary Environmental Analysis (EA) for the proposed event notes, \u201cInfrastructure on BLM-administered lands would be minimal and temporary, limited to course features, spectator access, and event delineation fencing or flagging. The majority of event infrastructure, including staging, broadcasting, and spectator facilities, would occur on adjacent private lands.\u201d<\/p>\n

The document goes on to say, in part, \u201cthe event would involve temporary construction and use of single-track routes on steep, natural terrain. Each athlete would select and design a route from a designated start point at the top of the mountain to the finish line at the base.\u201d<\/p>\n

The proposed 2026 Red Bull Rampage competition site is located off North Kolob Terrace Road<\/a> on BLM-managed land. <\/p>\n

The St. George Field Office of the BLM is managing the approval process and is collecting public comments through July 12, 2026. Dates for Red Bull Rampage 2026 have not been announced, though the event is usually held in October each year. Tickets generally sell out quickly once they become available.<\/p>\n
