On Friday, the company unveiled the limited preview of its new GPT 5.6 model suite: Sol, the flagship; Terra, a medium-tier model for \u201chigh-volume work\u201d; and Luna, a \u201cfast and affordable\u201d everyday model. OpenAI says it\u2019s especially skilled at coding, cybersecurity, and biology, as well as staying focused during long-horizon agentic AI tasks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Per million tokens, GPT-5.6 Sol is priced at $5 input \/ $30 output (nearly half the cost of Anthropic\u2019s Claude Fable 5, which is $10 input \/ $50 output). Terra is half the cost of Sol, and Luna is less than half the cost of Terra. The company also debuted two additional modes for Sol: a \u201cmax\u201d mode for deeper reasoning and an \u201cultra\u201d mode for leveraging sub-agents \u2014 evoking OpenClaw, and perhaps a sign of OpenClaw creator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/879623\/openclaw-founder-peter-steinberger-joins-openai\">Peter Steinberger<\/a>\u2019s work at OpenAI so far.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Unsurprisingly amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/957327\/anthropic-mythos-fable-ai-trump-administration-negotiations\">security panic in Washington, D.C.<\/a>, OpenAI dedicated the majority of its announcement blog post to safety and potential misuse. It appeared to reference the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/950412\/anthropic-trump-adminstration-claude-mythos-fable-5-export-controls\">recent jailbreaking travails<\/a> of its rival Anthropic, writing that \u201cGPT\u20105.6 is trained to refuse prohibited cyber assistance, including when users attempt to disguise their intent or jailbreak the model.\u201d It also said that flagship model Sol \u201cis better at helping people find and fix vulnerabilities than reliably carrying out end-to-end attacks,\u201d and that Sol doesn\u2019t cross the cyber-critical threshold under OpenAI\u2019s preparedness framework \u2014 though it should be noted that OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/updating-our-preparedness-framework\/\">recently revised<\/a> its preparedness framework in April and removed some areas of previous study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The company said Sol has the company\u2019s \u201cmost robust safety stack to date\u201d and that it \u201cstrengthened protections for higher-risk activity, sensitive cyber requests, and repeated misuse.\u201d OpenAI said it had dedicated \u201capproximately 700,000 A100e GPU hours\u201d to automated red-teaming and also worked with third-party testers, the latter of which will continue to test it for the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">OpenAI also seemed to be taking an extra-sensitive approach during the preview period, which is being closely monitored by the Trump administration. The company wrote that \u201csafeguards may occasionally intervene on legitimate work, particularly in dual-use areas where defensive and offensive activity can initially look similar. That is part of what the preview is designed to test.\u201d The report earlier this week said that the Trump administration will approve customers on a case-by-case basis during the preview period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">OpenAI said the model suite should be generally available in the coming weeks because the company believes in \u201cbroad access,\u201d and that the company cooperated with the US government ahead of this launch, but that it hopefully wouldn\u2019t be the norm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWe don\u2019t believe this kind of government access process should become the long-term default,\u201d the company wrote. \u201cIt keeps the best tools from users, developers, enterprises, cyber defenders, and global partners who need them.
