\n\tSombr has done it again; with his latest single, he continues to give voice to the complicated feelings that come with moving on, or in this case, not being ready to (the New Yorker continues to be the sole writer of his music as well). By now, he\u2019s proven that he can deliver a pop-rock banger just as easily a contemplative slow-burn, the latter of which best describes \u201cMy Body Isn\u2019t Ready.\u201d For fans who are subscribing to \u201csad summer,\u201d as Noah Kahan is calling it, this song fits right in.<\/p>\n

Phoebe Bridgers, \u201cLost Boys\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tOpening with glitchy, distorted lyrics, \u201cLost Boys\u201d quickly snaps into focus as a folky, fairly polished pop song \u2014 one that sounds right at home for Bridgers while also hinting at an expanded sonic universe for her upcoming third album, Lost Weekend<\/em>, out in August. Fittingly, Jack Antonoff co-produced alongside Tony Berg (a frequent sombr collaborator) and Ethan Gruska \u2014 with vocal support from Bridgers\u2019 Boygenius bandmates Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. For its first three-and-a-half minutes, \u201cLost Boys\u201d functions as a warmly welcomed lead single \u2014 perhaps hinting at a theme of feeling lost in it all \u2014 but then, Phoebe hits us with a classic Bridgers scream, showing there\u2019s still some angst under this smoother sonic surface.<\/p>\n

Steve Lacy feat. SZA, \u201cis it cool?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tAfter launching his next album era with the airy indie-rap lead single \u201cthe feeling,\u201d Steve Lacy\u2019s second release \u201cis it cool?\u201d is a quicker hit (it\u2019s nearly <\/em>half the runtime as its predecessor). As a result, it tells a tighter story in conversation with SZA who drops in for just two verses (plus some harmonies) about the role trust plays in a partnership. \u201cYou ain\u2019t gotta trust me to love me, baby\/ \u2018Cause I don\u2019t even trust myself,\u201d sings Lacy. Though somewhere along the way, it\u2019s as if he realizes in realtime how uncool that really is, concluding: \u201cMaybe I should trust myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gracie Abrams, \u201cLook at My Life\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tThe second single from Gracie\u2019s upcoming album, Daughter From Hell<\/em>, continues the narrative arch of its first: that everything\u2019s not really as great as it may seem. And while lead single \u201cHit the Wall\u201d lays it out quite simply, \u201cLook at My Life\u201d pulls at that thread with a bit of maniacal denial, disguising harsh truths under driving pop production \u201cDo I look high-functioning or\/ Is my fa\u00e7ade crumbling?\u201d Abrams asks, before singing on the chorus, \u201cBet you can\u2019t tell, but it\u2019s kind of a bad time\/ A new spiral every night\/ Bawling my eyes out\/ No, but I\u2019m so fine.\u201d Perhaps her third single will be the judge of that.<\/p>\n

Katy Perry, \u201cWatch It Burn\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tWith \u201cWatch It Burn,\u201d Katy comes full force with a new perspective (essentially, f\u2013k it) and new crew of collaborators including Justin Tranter (the two teamed on previous single \u201cbandaids\u201d), Jason Gill, Kiddo and more. While the song clocks in under three minutes, there\u2019s an defiant clarity to it \u2014 essentially proving the point that there\u2019s nothing more for her to work out in her head or the studio. As she says herself: \u201cI\u2019m gonna get what I deserve\u2026Finally I put myself first.\u201d And what a great place to be, judging by the sound of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
