Focus Features has released the first photo from Nosferatu<\/u><\/a> director Robert Eggers\u2019 next period horror film, Werwullf<\/u><\/a>, which can be seen below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In his first interview about Werwullf, Eggers told Esquire<\/u><\/a> how his film will be unlike any other werewolf movie and also revealed details about the characters played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, both of whom previously starred in Eggers\u2019 Nosferatu.<\/p>\n

Werwullf follows a 13th-century farmer (Taylor-Johnson) who transforms into a werewolf. Depp plays his wife and the mother of his children \u2013 Eggers calls her \u201cthe heart of the movie\u201d \u2013 while Willem Dafoe plays a hunter. \u201cNobody has a name in the movie. Aside from a dog,\u201d Eggers said, laughing.<\/p>\n

Taylor-Johnson\u2019s farmer is \u201ca man who is cursed. It\u2019s a story about a man who is cursed and is trying to find salvation through love. He\u2019s a character who is haunted and in great pain.\u201d <\/p>\n

The director said Taylor-Johnson\u2019s protagonist inhabits \u201ca really brutal, unforgiving, merciless, grotesque world. More than ever, it\u2019s mud and blood and dung and rain and pain and suffering. Aaron\u2019s performance is incredibly harrowing. We\u2019ll say without a doubt that it\u2019s his best performance, and the stuff that he does physically in the transformation scenes are incredibly extreme. The emotional intensity he brings to [the] role is equally as extreme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor-Johnson studied a real wolf to adopt aspects of its behavior, and also worked with movement coach Marie Gabriel-Rotie (another Nosferatu veteran) for months to master the contortions and physical demands of playing a werewolf.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s dialogue \u2013 by Eggers and his The Northman<\/a> collaborator Sj\u00f3n \u2013 is in Middle English, although it\u2019s been \u201ctempered\u201d by a dialect coach to make it more comprehensible for the modern ear.<\/p>\n

Shot on 35mm film, Eggers said Werwullf will have \u201ca very unique look\u201d that was achieved by using an orthochromatic treatment in post-production to make the actors’ complexions more sickly and by incorporating \u201cthe grain structure of black-and-white film onto color film.\u201d<\/p>\n
