We\u2019ve seen it at the Traka and at Unbound already, and now Canyon teased it once more at Eurobike: a new Grail CFR. It\u2019s a rather interesting marketing strategy: the bike has been out in the wild for a few months, but the German brand is still not saying anything about it and apparently won\u2019t be doing so for a while.<\/p>\n

As it\u2019s still unreleased, details on the bike are thin, but we got a proper look at what is surely going to be Canyon\u2019s new high-end bike for gravel racing. That positioning is supported by the CFR designation, which Canyon only awards to its top-tier race bikes.<\/p>\n

With gravel racing becoming increasingly fast, aerodynamics is no longer just a point of focus for road bike development, but just as critical for gravel cycling. The recent launch of the Specialized Crux 5 is a clear example of that, and Canyon seems to be heading in a similar direction.<\/p>\n

Aero Optimization and Kammtail Profiles<\/h2>\n

Looking at the new frameset of the Grail CFR, the aero features are distinct. Many of the tubes feature deeper, elongated profiles designed to optimize aerodynamic performance, and the lengthy head tube is a telltale sign of this aero character.<\/p>\n

Canyon relies heavily on Kammtail tube profiles across the frame to balance drag reduction with weight savings. Another element of the frame design that immediately stands out is the seat tube, which has been kept remarkably slim.<\/p>\n

Endurace Design DNA and Frame Storage<\/h2>\n

The new gravel bike clearly borrows aerodynamic design features from the Endurace CFR that Canyon launched just this spring, particularly the down tube. Much like the Endurace, the unreleased Grail CFR manipulates its tube shape around the front bottle cage to optimize airflow. However, unlike the Endurace CFR\u2014which ditched frame storage to prioritize weight savings\u2014the Grail CFR features an integrated internal storage compartment tucked underneath that bottle mount.<\/p>\n

Another shared component is the SP0093 VCLS Aero seatpost. This design features a distinctive cut-out filled with an elastomer insert to improve vertical compliance. According to Canyon, this construction boosts comfort by 25 percent compared to a rigid equivalent.<\/p>\n

Clearance, 1x Dedication, and UDH Compliance<\/h2>\n

In terms of tire clearance, the new Grail CFR accommodates modern big rubber, likely maxing out around 55mm. One of the two models on display was fitted with 2.1-inch Schwalbe Thunder Burt mountain bike tires\u2014which measure 53mm wide\u2014and still had room to spare.<\/p>\n

The new frame appears strictly dedicated to 1x drivetrains, as there is no mounting point for a front derailleur on the seat tube. The frame is built around the open Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) standard. While this specific build utilizes a standard hanger to accommodate the Shimano GRX rear derailleur, it is fully compatible with direct-mount systems.<\/p>\n

Pro Cockpits and Tour de France Tech<\/h2>\n

An interesting component choice was that the two bikes at the Canyon booth featured different handlebars. Particularly notable was the use of the CP053 RACE cockpit on one of the models, a component Canyon revealed alongside the Endurace earlier this year.<\/p>\n

This cockpit features forward-sweeping extensions designed to deliver an additional aero advantage. So much so, that Canyon also had a new model of the Aeroad on display equipped with this cockpit, claiming it will be the most aerodynamic bike at the Tour de France.<\/p>\n

The decision to mount it on a Grail CFR is another testament to the bike\u2019s racing pedigree. The other Grail on display had an equally race-oriented setup, featuring the PACE bar\u2014the handlebar typically chosen for the Aeroad.<\/p>\n

For now, it seems we\u2019ll have to wait a bit longer before we get all the details on the new Canyon Grail CFR.<\/p>\n
