\n\tThe office of New York City Zohran Mamdani announced this week that New Yorkers who present their own World Cup-inspired poster to the Whitney will receive free admission (from July 11 through the end of the month). Rich Tu, the artist who created FIFA\u2019s official poster for the New York and New Jersey chapter of the competition, designed the project. Interested parties can find a digital leaflet\u2014available in English and Spanish\u2014on the Whitney\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n\tThe leaflet includes a blank canvas for the design, and loose instructions to convey \u201ca powerful message\u201c that responds to the prompt \u201cwhere the world comes to play.\u201d Tu provides guidelines for the aspirational artists, such as framing a single, striking image with an eye-catching headline and smaller, contextual print.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhen I\u2019m making a poster, the first thing that I think about is, what\u2019s the purpose,\u201d Tu writes on the website. \u201cWhat is the visual language I want to bring to the table?\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe project, co-organized by the Mayor\u2019s Office, the New York\u2013New Jersey Host Committee, and the Whitney, follows the citywide Knicks fever that culminated in the team\u2019s first NBA championship in 35 years. As more than a million people flooded downtown Manhattan for the Knicks\u2019 ticker-tape parade last week, it\u2019s safe to say New York\u2019s sporting spirit is high.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u00a0\u201cThis partnership with the Whitney helps ensure that the excitement of the World Cup belongs to all of us, putting art and access at the heart of this historic summer,\u201d Mamdani said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThe World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring New Yorkers together,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe want every New Yorker to be part of this moment \u2014 not just in the stadium, but in their neighborhoods, their schools, and the public spaces that make New York the greatest city on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
