Yesterday, as usual, was stacked. In honor of the NBA Draft, we\u2019re going to make a big board of stories, hunch over our desks, conduct a few calls and make our picks for yesterday\u2019s most important folks:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. AJ Dybantsa, actual No. 1 pick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BYU phenom, as we mostly expected,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7384205\/2026\/06\/23\/aj-dybantsa-washington-wizards-2026-nba-draft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went first<\/a>\u00a0in last night\u2019s draft to the Wizards, filling out what could be a very interesting team next season. Washington adds Dybantsa a day after signing Trae Young to a four-year, $212 million deal, and Anthony Davis \u2014 when healthy \u2014 is still an elite big man. Fun.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid1\" data-position=\"mid1\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>At No. 2, the Jazz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7388492\/2026\/06\/23\/darryn-peterson-2026-nba-draft-utah-jazz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selected<\/a>\u00a0Kansas\u2019 Darryn Peterson, despite the prospect refusing to work out for anyone except Washington.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/interactive\/nba-draft-2026-live-results-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>See the full list of picks here<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Brendan Sorsby, stuck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I almost feel bad for Sorsby at this point. After bowing out of college football last week, as Texas Tech \u2014 where Sorsby never played a snap \u2014 prepared to defend him, the talented yet troubled quarterback opted to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. The saga was over, we thought.<\/p>\n<p>But yesterday, the NFL issued a stern rebuke of Sorsby, who admitted to illegal gambling while playing college football, deciding the league would not even hold a supplemental draft this year. That means the 22-year-old is ineligible to play in the NFL until the 2027 season, when he can enter the regular draft.<\/p>\n<p>What Sorsby does next is unclear. Cristiano Ronaldo, late to the party, but still here<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 41-year-old has watched his counterparts rack up goals at this World Cup, notably Lionel Messi, while doing nothing of note during Portugal\u2019s opening draw against DR Congo. Yesterday, Ronaldo arrived.<\/p>\n<div id=\"top-league-content-root\"><\/div>\n<p>    {&#8220;endpoint&#8221;:&#8221;https:\/\/api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com\/graphql&#8221;}<\/p>\n<p>He scored twice in Portugal\u2019s 5-0 blowout of Uzbekistan, a first-time Cup participant, to register a goal in six World Cups. No one has done that, not even Messi. As he said following the game:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7376801\/2026\/06\/23\/cristiano-ronaldo-portugal-uzbekistan-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cI\u2019m back.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere at the World Cup yesterday:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I almost picked the Ghanaian witch doctor who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/sport\/football\/article-15918999\/Harry-Kane-Curse-Witch-Doctor-Ronaldo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">cursed<\/a>\u00a0England\u2019s Harry Kane in this slot. Ghana and England drew yesterday in a physical match, which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7376802\/2026\/06\/23\/england-ghana-world-cup-result-pickford-foul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a disappointment<\/a>\u00a0for Thomas Tuchel\u2019s side. Kane missed a golden chance to score in the 86th minute, too.<\/li>\n<li>Panama\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7387634\/2026\/06\/23\/panama-croatia-world-cup-2026-score-results-takeaways-modric-budimir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is out<\/a>\u00a0after a loss to Croatia and Luka Modric, who made his 200th cap last night. Nori, 52, is plenty qualified for the job, having served twice as interim coach in Minnesota, and is generally regarded as one of the league\u2019s smartest tacticians. It can only be seen as a move of desperation; Edmonton needs to maximize its title window while Connor McDavid is still around. Babcock, despite his past, has won a Stanley Cup.
