This was a coachbuilt special with a hand-crafted aluminium body and design inspired by roadsters of the 1930s and 40s. It was also limited to just 50 examples, and by the time we’d seen it all were sold out. Booo.

And yet, while we wallowed in the knowledge that we’d never own one, one clever so and so was straight on the phone to Morgan to ask if they’d make him a Midsummer that was a little more practical.

This is the end result, and isn’t it pretty. Morgan now says it’ll make 10 Midsummer Coupes in total, with the car you see above acting as the prototype and “artists’ proof”. The following nine will each be highly personalised client commissions.

“The brief for this special commission was clear. It was not simply about adding a roof,” reads the Morgan press release. “Instead, the ambition was to evolve the concept into something entirely new while preserving the character, proportions and sense of occasion that defined Midsummer, whilst introducing a greater sense of drama.”

Certainly plenty of drama in that glass roof with its stainless steel central strip, isn’t there? Morgan also claims that there’s “greater visual tension” and “a stronger sense of purpose”, and perhaps they’ve been spending a bit too long hanging around the Pininfarina offices. The shape of the side windows was apparently inspired by Italian sports cars of the 1960s, while the forged 19in wheels deploy Morgan’s most intricate design to date.

The Coupe is fully weather sealed (not a given for Morgans), and features both climate control and fitted luggage to make it a proper Grand Tourer. This prototype then features plenty of teak in its interior, but each customer will be able to choose their preferred brand of timber. You’ll also spot the new aluminium drive selector that was introduced with the Supersport 400. Much better than the plasticky BMW item of old. We wonder if the 400’s erm… 402bhp engine has also been carried over to the Coupe?

Despite all the extra work needed to fit the roof, Morgan says the Midsummer Coupe weighs just 2.5 per cent more than a Supersport fitted with a hardtop. And yes, it does still use a wooden frame under all of that fancy hand-shaped aluminium.

Back in 2024, Morgan gave us a bit of a shock by revealing the exquisite Pininfarina-designed Midsummer.
