IN MEMORIAM<\/strong>. Artist, activist, philanthropist, and community leader\u00a0Daniel \u201cDanny\u201d Simmons<\/strong>\u00a0has died at 72,\u00a0reports<\/strong>\u00a0ARTnews\u2019\u00a0<\/em>Brian Boucher. Simmons was the older brother of hip-hop star Russel Simmons and rapper Joseph Simmons, known as Rev Run, of the group Run-DMC. The three brothers co-founded the New York gallery\u00a0Rush Arts<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation<\/strong>, which supported disadvantaged artists of color. Simmons also founded\u00a0Corridor Gallery\u00a0<\/strong>in his Brooklyn loft apartment, to name just a few of his creative initiatives and long list of accomplishments. As for his artistic style, self-described as Neo-African Abstract Expressionism, it was recently on full display at the traveling exhibition \u201cDanny Simmons: The Journey to Everything,\u201d at the\u00a0Reginald F. Lewis Museum<\/strong>in Baltimore in 2024, and the\u00a0Houston Museum of African American Culture<\/strong>\u00a0in 2025. In a 2017 interview with\u00a0Griot<\/em>, Simmons memorably stated: \u201cArt saves lives. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n LAST WISHES<\/strong>. For his final wishes,\u00a0David Hockney<\/strong>asked for only two people to attend his funeral last week: his partner,\u00a0Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima<\/strong>, and his great-nephew,\u00a0Richard Hockney<\/strong>, a photographer who also worked as his assistant,\u00a0reports<\/strong>\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>.
