Check out footage below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: Foo Fighters deliver the dopamine on the futureproof rock beast \u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bassist started out as a member of the Seattle group, before they disbanded after their second album and both Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith went to join Foo Fighters in the mid \u201890s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While Goldsmith left the Dave Grohl-led band in 1997 during work on \u2018The Color And Shape\u2019 \u2013 with Grohl re-recoding all of his drum parts \u2013 Mendel has been in the line-up much longer, and only returned to Sunny Day Real Estate briefly in 2009 for a reunion tour.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Foo Fighters have kicked off their 2026 \u2018Take Cover\u2019 tour \u2013 which celebrates the release of latest album \u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019 \u2013 Mendel has been using the shows to make a nod to his other band.<\/p>\n<p>At each show since a stop in Norway on June 10, Foo Fighters have been breaking out a medley of No Use For A Name\u2019s \u2018Invincible\u2019, The Wallflowers\u2019 \u2018One Headlight\u2019, and their own tracks \u2018Manimal\u2019 and \u2018Tap Dancing in a Minefield\u2019. They were called Sunny Day Real Estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a Sunny Day Real Estate song, as sung by Nate Mendel,\u201d he added, before the spotlight went onto Mendel for the cover.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 \u2018Take Cover\u2019 tour continues with two nights in Liverpool, set for June 25 and 27, and also includes festival appearances at Mad Cool and NOS Alive. Get any remaining tickets here.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Their current drummer is ex-Nine Inch Nails member Ilan Rubin, who joined following Foo\u2019s decision to boot Josh Freese from the line-up \u2013 who joined the line-up in 2023 following the sudden passing of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>He toured with them throughout 2024, and in May last year, the Foos announced that he had been let go \u2013 a move that the sticksman said he was \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cdisappointed\u201d by. He has now joined Nine Inch Nails, meaning him and Rubin have effectively swapped groups.<\/p>\n<p>Goldsmith was the original drummer for Foos, and played with them between 1995 and 1997. He left the group after Grohl re-recorded nearly all of his drum parts without telling him, and was later replaced by Taylor Hawkins.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Goldsmith made headlines when he hit out at Grohl for his treatment in the band, saying he was left feeling \u201ccreatively raped\u201d by the frontman and comparing him to a \u201cmean\u201d high school bully.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Hawkins then defended Grohl, and reminded fans that Goldsmith chose to leave the group.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Grohl looked back at his time with the original drummer when he thanked past members \u2013 including Goldsmith and Freese \u2013 showing gratitude for their contributions, celebrating 30 years of Foo Fighters and sharing \u2018Today\u2019s Song\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, guitarist Pat Smear looked back at the departure of Goldsmith and shared that he \u201cdidn\u2019t like\u201d how things ended. \u201cDave was just learning to be a bandleader; we could have handled the whole thing better. It left a bad taste,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019 arrived in April, and <em>NME<\/em> gave it three-and-a-half stars, noting: \u201c\u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019 is a few more tracks of that depth away from being the most vital Foo Fighters record since 1997\u2019s \u2018The Colour and the Shape\u2019,\u201d we wrote. \u201cFor now, at least, they have remembered that Check out footage below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: Foo Fighters deliver the dopamine on the futureproof rock beast \u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bassist started out as a member of the Seattle group, before they disbanded after their second album and both Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith went to join Foo Fighters in the mid \u201890s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While Goldsmith left the Dave Grohl-led band in 1997 during work on \u2018The Color And Shape\u2019 \u2013 with Grohl re-recoding all of his drum parts \u2013 Mendel has been in the line-up much longer, and only returned to Sunny Day Real Estate briefly in 2009 for a reunion tour.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Foo Fighters have kicked off their 2026 \u2018Take Cover\u2019 tour \u2013 which celebrates the release of latest album \u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019 \u2013 Mendel has been using the shows to make a nod to his other band.<\/p>\n<p>At each show since a stop in Norway on June 10, Foo Fighters have been breaking out a medley of No Use For A Name\u2019s \u2018Invincible\u2019, The Wallflowers\u2019 \u2018One Headlight\u2019, and their own tracks \u2018Manimal\u2019 and \u2018Tap Dancing in a Minefield\u2019. They were called Sunny Day Real Estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a Sunny Day Real Estate song, as sung by Nate Mendel,\u201d he added, before the spotlight went onto Mendel for the cover.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 \u2018Take Cover\u2019 tour continues with two nights in Liverpool, set for June 25 and 27, and also includes festival appearances at Mad Cool and NOS Alive. Get any remaining tickets here.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad2 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">Advertisement<\/span>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-article-2\" class=\"lazy-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Their current drummer is ex-Nine Inch Nails member Ilan Rubin, who joined following Foo\u2019s decision to boot Josh Freese from the line-up \u2013 who joined the line-up in 2023 following the sudden passing of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>He toured with them throughout 2024, and in May last year, the Foos announced that he had been let go \u2013 a move that the sticksman said he was \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cdisappointed\u201d by. He has now joined Nine Inch Nails, meaning him and Rubin have effectively swapped groups.<\/p>\n<p>Goldsmith was the original drummer for Foos, and played with them between 1995 and 1997. He left the group after Grohl re-recorded nearly all of his drum parts without telling him, and was later replaced by Taylor Hawkins.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Goldsmith made headlines when he hit out at Grohl for his treatment in the band, saying he was left feeling \u201ccreatively raped\u201d by the frontman and comparing him to a \u201cmean\u201d high school bully.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Hawkins then defended Grohl, and reminded fans that Goldsmith chose to leave the group.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Grohl looked back at his time with the original drummer when he thanked past members \u2013 including Goldsmith and Freese \u2013 showing gratitude for their contributions, celebrating 30 years of Foo Fighters and sharing \u2018Today\u2019s Song\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, guitarist Pat Smear looked back at the departure of Goldsmith and shared that he \u201cdidn\u2019t like\u201d how things ended. \u201cDave was just learning to be a bandleader; we could have handled the whole thing better.
