For one NBA scout who saw Santa Clara this season, Allen Graves didn\u2019t look like a prospect on the radar for the 2026 NBA Draft. He was aware of Graves, but the forward\u2019s game didn\u2019t excite him.<\/p>\n

But the analytics staff for this scout\u2019s team raved about Graves, which prompted the scout to take a second look.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came around to agree with our analytics people,\u201d said the scout, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to publicly discuss team matters. \u201cI don\u2019t feel about it the way they do, but he\u2019s better than I thought he was initially, and that\u2019s a place where analytics and the intuitive eye work together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graves started this season as an unknown big man coming off the bench at Santa Clara. He redshirted his first season in the program and was an unranked recruit despite being the Louisiana Player of the Year as a high school senior. He started only four games at Santa Clara, a mid-major program in the West Coast Conference. His primary stats didn\u2019t stand out, either: 11.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.<\/p>\n

Uh, I heard a little bit about him being a possible NBA draft sleeper. Uh, the advanced stats really liked what he brought in terms of his steal rate, his block rate, assisted turnover ratio, the way he offensive rebounded. I came away from that game like many others where I wasn’t entirely sure if this was the year for Graves to go. Uh, would NBA teams want to see him do what he did against high major competition. Um, also too, in the age of NIL players are more incentivized than ever to stay in college, um, versus being a late. 1st round pick to a 2nd round pick just because they would make more money in college. But here we are on the eve of the draft and Alan Graves is likely going to be a 1st round selection. One analytics staffer told the Athletic that Graves, even being on the draft radar this year and this being even a conversation. Um, just shows the growing amount of trust that front offices are having in analytics in terms of guiding their decision making. Now, analytics is not the, the end all be all. There’s also the scouting perspective you need to consider. One scout told the athletic that earlier in the season when he went to go check out Graves, it wasn’t super high on him just from evaluation perspective. But after the analytics staff for that, that scout’s team raved about Graves, he went to go check him out, um, and he came away. A little bit higher than Graves than he initially was. Now, he’s not as high as what the draft models are saying, but he was higher in general, and he said this is an example of how, you know, analytics and the scouting eye can work together. For the story, I asked a lot of people if Graves had the same exact season 10 to 15 years ago at a time when analytics wasn’t as prevalent, would he even be on draft radars? The scout said that most likely not. He said he he himself personally might have known because. He’s familiar with Santa Clara, uh, he says, I don’t think he would have been on the general NBA draft radar.
