Inspired by the success of in-game drinks breaks at the FIFA World Cup, Formula One has announced it will introduce mandatory driver hydration stops every four laps at this weekend\u2019s Austrian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After roughly five minutes of intense wheel-to-wheel racing, all drivers at the Red Bull Ring will be required to pull over and rehydrate with a cool, refreshing, sponsor-approved beverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cStopping the race 17 times might sound like an unnecessary measure that\u2019ll destroy the flow of the racing,\u201d explained an F1 spokesperson. \u201cBut as FIFA\u2019s proved, it\u2019s about creating the best conditions for our sporting heroes to perform. The fact it gives a tonne more advertising opportunities is a totally coincidental side-effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The three-minute breaks will also offer team principals the opportunity to issue mid-race tactical tips to their drivers like, for example, \u201cHave you tried driving a bit faster, Lance?\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics of the move have pointed out that the Red Bull Ring \u2013 on account of sitting at an altitude of over 700 metres and also being in the Alps \u2013 isn\u2019t an especially hot venue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about the principle,\u201d stated the spokesperson. \u201cThe principle that there\u2019s no element of sporting tradition we can\u2019t rip up on a whim. I mean, driver comfort. Because without the drivers, there\u2019s no show. Those cars can\u2019t drive themselves. Not until 2028 at least.\u201d<\/p>\n

FIFA\u2019s inspiration won\u2019t end with totally-necessary hydration breaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve demonstrated that with the right mindset, there\u2019s essentially no limit to what a governing body can achieve. Financially speaking,” cooed the spokesperson.<\/p>\n

So, mirroring the success of the newly-expanded World Cup, the 2027 F1 season is set to include 48 drivers competing in 48 races across the year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSport is a good thing, and more of a good thing is always a good thing,\u201d explained the spokesperson. \u201cIs there such a thing as \u2018too much medicine\u2019? There is not. Is there such a thing as \u2018too much money?\u2019 Not that we\u2019ve yet discovered!\u201d<\/p>\n
