The Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo, the most accomplished player in franchise history, to the Miami Heat just before the team\u2019s self-imposed deadline of the 2026 NBA Draft, league sources confirmed to The Athletic<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The move ended a 13-year run for Antetokounmpo that included two NBA MVPs, the Bucks\u2019 first championship in half a century and years of questions about whether the player and team would ever part ways. This time, the saga finally led to a separation.<\/p>\n

The Bucks will receive Tyler Herro, Kel\u2019el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jaku\u010dionis, three first-round picks (No. 13 in 2026, 2031, 2033), a 2030 first-round pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick, while also sending Bobby Portis to Miami. ESPN was first to report the deal, though it remains to be seen if the deal expands in the coming weeks, as it can\u2019t be finalized until July 6 and could evolve. More specifically, league sources say there is a great deal of interest around the league in Herro, and the Bucks will consider the prospect of sending him elsewhere. The Bucks, per a team source, are also considering keeping Herro (he has one season left on his deal at $33 million).<\/p>\n

Antetokounmpo, 31, averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in just 28.9 minutes per game, but he made only 36 appearances \u2014 many on a minutes limit \u2014 as he worked through multiple injuries during the 2025-26 season. It was the first time Antetokounmpo missed making an All-NBA team since 2016, and the injury-riddled season broke a streak of seven consecutive first-team All-NBA honors.<\/p>\n

While Boston\u2019s pursuit of Antetokounmpo was of the covert variety, with the Celtics going to great lengths to keep Jaylen Brown\u2019s involvement quiet until the very end, the Heat declared boldly and loudly after their season that it was time for them to land another star.<\/p>\n

They had fallen to the Charlotte Hornets in a season-ending Play-In game two weeks before, marking the first time in seven seasons that the Heat didn\u2019t make the playoffs. In the two previous years, Miami, which reached the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023 during the Jimmy Butler era, had fallen in the first round. And as longtime team president Pat Riley made so clear during his late-April news conference, there was a burning desire to add additional star power to the roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really pissed,\u201d he said then<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed. Disgruntled, just like everyone else in the organization who understands what we\u2019re about. So, the last three to four years, with the exception of when we went to the finals, I\u2019m not proud of.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not good enough, and we\u2019re not happy with it. And I think this is the first time in three years we can do something about it. I believe players want to play in Miami \u2014 some don\u2019t. I think we\u2019re a destination play. You never know until you get into the market and start having those discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Riley did know, however, was that the Heat had already believed they were close to getting a deal done for Antetokounmpo at the February trade deadline. At the time, the Bucks ultimately decided to spend that time as a fact-finding mission of sorts before pushing the negotiations into the summer.<\/p>\n

It would take Miami four more months to get its guy, but Antetokounmpo is, in fact, Miami-bound after all.<\/p>\n
