Though there\u2019s been a lot of talk about the advantages of the 32-inch wheel size<\/a> for cross-country mountain biking, we haven\u2019t seen one at a World Cup start line yet. But that could change this weekend in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Swiss bike brand Th\u00f6mus is teasing a 32-inch version of their Lightrider XC race bike, and sponsored rider Mathias Fl\u00fcckiger has been shown in videos riding around the pit area and on course.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Josh Carlson, posted on the official UCI MTB World Series Instagram channel, Fl\u00fcckiger said the Maxon team is still testing the bigger wheel size to see if there\u2019s an advantage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s faster, we actually don\u2019t know. We are testing and we will find out soon. But hard to say,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will see if it\u2019s [an] advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Th\u00f6mus bike Fl\u00fcckiger is seen riding is set up with Schwalbe Rick 32\u00d72.4\u2033 tires and a DT Swiss fork. We spotted a number of 32-inch suspension forks<\/a> at Sea Otter this year, though the DT Swiss fork was not among them.<\/p>\n

Fl\u00fcckiger is set to race in the short track competition in just a few hours. His tenth start position places him in the top quartile, so the team will need to consider if it\u2019s worth taking a risk on an unproven bike.<\/p>\n

Carlson asked Fl\u00fcckiger directly if he would be racing on the 32er this weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tested a lot actually and it\u2019s a good feeling, but we have to still to [\u2026] be smart. Number one thing is that it\u2019s still racing, don\u2019t have any risk,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will decide internally in the team in which direction we go, and of course, there is a chance that we race it, and there is also a chance we go as it is or was in the past few years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Felix Stehli competed in the Cape Epic cross-country stage race on a 32er Stoll P32 mountain bike, and along with teammate Marc Pritzen, who was on a 29er, won stage 3 of the event.<\/p>\n
