Institute of the Estonian Language were deemed likely to use Russian propaganda in their answers.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--next js-article-content\">\n<p>Europe\u2019s most prominent artificial intelligence (AI) model is among the most vulnerable to Russian propaganda, a new study showed.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt Mistral AI, OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT and Anthropic\u2019s Claude, a series of 75 questions in three language to gauge how likely the models are to promote Russian propaganda or how filter out Kremlin talking points.<\/p>\n<p>The work covered 14 themes, such as oft-repeated incorrect claims that Russia was legitimately evacuating Ukrainian children from war zones and that NATO broke promises not to expand east after German reunification.<\/p>\n<p>The answers were then scored on a scale of 1-5, with 5 indicating a balanced response and 1 indicating an amplification of misleading or false claims.<\/p>\n<p>All four Mistral versions measured in the study scored less than 40% in their ability to detect Kremlin lines across all areas analysed. The study also found that at least 12 of Mistral\u2019s answers referred to sanctioned sources widely considered to be purveyors of pro-Russian reporting, such as Russia Today or Sputnik News.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Airbus and BMW strike deals with France\u2019s Mistral to bring AI to defence and safety systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mistral is often seen as Europe\u2019s main competitor to US giants Anthropic and Claude, but this is not the first time that it has failed testing for Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>An April 2026 analysis by NewsGuard, a US rating system for news sites, found that Mistral\u2019s Le Chat repeated Russian falsehoods 50% of the time in English and 56.6% of the time in French.
