The bike represents what the Italian brand labels a climbing bike, but seems to actually be far more than that in practice. It’s also a chance to see how Bianchi is approaching the next generation of design language after what many would call a generation of divisive looks.

Is the Bianchi Specialissima an aero bike?

Bianchi has an aero bike called the Oltre, however the information shared about the new Specialissima starts not with references to climbing but with a statement of intent as the brand refers to the bike as its “flagship all-rounder.”

From there weight is only a passing comment. Bianchi claims it is “the brand’s lightest bike to date,” with the latest version of the top shelf RC version of the frame coming in 40 grams lighter than the previous generation. That puts it at 750g for a size 55 frame, which is light but does not quite challenge dedicated climbing frames from Scott, Specialized, Cervelo, or XDS. It doesn’t even challenge the Specialized Tarmac SL8 which doubles as an aero bike also.

(Photo: Bianchi)

What Bianchi does spend time talking about is the aerodynamics of the new Specialissima. Right away the brand drops the bombshell of a “16-watt improvement on its predecessor at 50km/h.” It’s an impressive figure but it almost hides some clever design decisions behind an easily dismissed number based on an unusually high test speed.

You have to look past that headline figure to see the details that have been massaged. The previous generation had a version of what Specialized calls the “Speed Sniffer.” Unlike the Specialized version it was somewhat subtle, but the effect of both was to bring the headtube slightly in front of the fork for better aerodynamics. This time, that design is gone and it’s been replaced by better integration behind the fork as well as adjustments to the fork itself. Bianchi claims a 17% increase in aerodynamic efficiency from the changes.

Bianchi claims big aero improvements with the cockpit. (Photo: Bianchi)

The other spot where Bianchi is claiming big aero gains, 25% more aerodynamic in this case, is the cockpit. Depending on the build there is, of course, an integrated one-piece bar and stem and it’s easy to cut through the marketing and see how these gains have been won. The new bar and stem is being offered in a more narrow fit than previous with a 55 frame moving from a 40 cm to a 38 cm bar. There is one additional bit of cleverness though as the shape actually tilts the controls towards the center of the bike.

There are real comfort considerations

As much as Bianchi is downplaying the weight innovations in the new bike, there is a bright spot the brand is not mentioning. One of the innovations that Bianchi is known for is a technology called Countervail that helps reduce vibrations within the carbon of frames that have it added. In the previous Bianchi Specialissima RC there was no Countervail offered as it’s an addition to the carbon mix and it adds weight. Coincidentally the difference between the previous Specialissima Pro and Specialissima RC was 40 grams.

It appears that Bianchi has found a way to reduce the weight gain associated with the vibration reduction technology. As already mentioned, the new RC model is 40 grams lighter than the last generation but it now offers Countervail that Bianchi claims offers “higher vibration-damping capabilities.” You will also find Countervail in the Pro and base models.

(Photo: Bianchi)

In addition to the extra material, the RC and Pro models will see an updated wheelset that should also help keep riders comfortable. The Bianchi RC 49R again represents a shift from a pure climbing bike to a more aero offering by jumping to a 49mm depth. Perhaps even more importantly for a lot of riders though, the new design has a 25mm internal width. That means more air volume and a more comfortable ride.

Bianchi has kept the geometry the same in this new generation. (Photo: Bianchi)

What hasn’t changed is the geometry. Bianchi claims the decision stems from team feedback and that the changes to the handlebar are enough for “improved comfort in an aero position.”

Pricing and
