Tobias Hallan Johannesssen (Uno-X Mobility) put in a late burst to grab third, two seconds further back. Maillot Jaune Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), who started the day first and second overall, dropped 1:43 to the stage winner.

Tuckwell held on to second in the final GC, ending the eight day race 54 seconds off yellow. Ayuso captured third at 1:17, while a fading by Jorgenson close to the finish dropped him from second to fourth.

Del Toro added to his GC wins this year in the UAE Tour and Tirreno Adriatico, and gets a very clear indication that his Tour de France preparations are right on track.

“This is something that is absolutely incredible,” he said. “Maybe I would have doubted a bit that I could win it, but it is a fantastic privilege to be in this situation. It fills me with pride. I am very impressed and really happy. It has gone much better than planned.”

He is often seen as the heir to Tadej Pogačar’s throne, both because of their shared team but also because of his talent. Del Toro is five years younger at 22 and will make his Tour de France debut next month.

His official role is to help Pogačar to a record-equaling fifth GC win and when asked, confirmed he would do exactly that.

“It will be full. The Frenchman crashed heavily on Saturday and while he hoped to bounce back on the final stage, things did not go as he intended.

Seven riders went clear prior to his DNF, namely Laurens De Plus, Carlos Rodriguez (Netcompany Ineos), Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon CMA CGM), Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step), Geoffrey Bouchard (Total Energies). Harold Tejada (XDS Astana), and Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama-FDJ United). They were later joined by Kevin Vauquelin (Netcompany Ineos).

However the UAE Emirates XRG team was leading the chase behind, keeping the gap at a reachable level, and the leaders had just 50 seconds with 50km remaining.

Once onto the final climb Paret-Peintre attacked the front group with 11km remaining. He was joined by Rodríguez and De Plus, while behind the UAE team were further ramping up the pressure.
