Mookie Wilson, an expert on how the mundane can morph into magic in a New York minute, suggests OG Anunoby get comfortable with becoming the city\u2019s latest overnight cult hero.<\/p>\n

The status, Wilson said, lasts forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis life is never going to be the same again in New York,\u201d Wilson told The Athletic<\/em> in a telephone interview Friday, two days after Anunoby\u2019s tip-in in the closing seconds of Game 4 gave the New York Knicks a 3-1 series lead over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.<\/p>\n

Wilson played a central role in another one of New York\u2019s signature sports moments. In Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, Wilson\u2019s slow roller down the line went through Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner\u2019s legs. The error in the bottom of the 10th inning capped an improbable two-out rally with no one on base, overcoming a two-run deficit that had the Mets down to their final strike on more than one occasion. Those were tough odds. Sound familiar?<\/p>\n

In Game 4 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, Anunoby soared to tip in a rebound and give the Knicks a one-point lead with 1.2 seconds left. They held on to take command of the series, capping the largest comeback in NBA Finals history after being down by 29 points in the first half.<\/p>\n

Anunoby\u2019s play put him in the pantheon of all-time New York plays, along with sequences such as the Giants\u2019 David Tyree\u2019s \u201chelmet\u201d catch<\/a> in Super Bowl XLII and Stephane Matteau\u2019s goal<\/a> Game 7 goal to beat the New Jersey Devils and send the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994. Like the Mets in 1986, more work remains for the Knicks. They are one win away from their first title since 1973, thanks to Anunoby\u2019s stunning putback.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe upside is that people remember it, and they want to talk about it 40 years ago as if it just happened yesterday,\u201d Wilson, 70, said. \u201cThe down part about it is that people want to know what you were thinking, and you can\u2019t explain it.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Anunoby) was just playing basketball and did what he was always told to do: go to the ball. Just like what I was always taught to do, and that is, you run no matter what.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson, watching the Knicks game on television, recognized magic.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just knew it was going to go down as one of those unforgettable plays,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIt shocked everybody. I couldn\u2019t believe it. I just could not believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He knows what comes next.<\/p>\n

When New York Mets fans see Wilson, they bring up the inevitable \u2014 1986, Buckner, the World Series. The play is not merely part of Wilson\u2019s identity. In the public\u2019s eye, it is<\/em> Wilson\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

On rare occasions, Wilson said, he feels the need to remind people he was a solid major-league outfielder, with 1,397 hits over 12 seasons. Almost always, however, Wilson indulges in talks about 1986.<\/p>\n

Wilson remains a fixture around the Mets and even serves his family\u2019s signature barbecue at Citi Field. His bright smile makes him easy to spot. Before the age of influencers, Wilson was a Mets brand ambassador. Mets PR whiz Jay Horwitz simply says, \u201cMookie is the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Wilson hasn\u2019t met Anunoby. They haven\u2019t talked. If they ever do, Wilson will encourage him to embrace the fame from the play.<\/p>\n

After all, it\u2019s not going anywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that he\u2019s going to have to just be able to take in stride and enjoy,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cJust accept the admiration that\u2019s going to come from that particular play.
