\n\tThe 19th-century museum is located in Sevastopol, Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014. Sevastopol\u2019s Russian-appointed governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, reported the damage on Telegram early Wednesday. According to Razvozhayev, the museum\u2019s 19th-century panorama painting by\u00a0Franz Roubaud,\u00a0titled the Siege of Sevastopol<\/em>, was damaged. However, \u201cpieces\u201d of the original canvas remained unharmed. \u201cThis building is not just a museum,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is a symbol of resilience, which has repeatedly taken the blows of the enemy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tRussia\u2019s Emergency Ministry, the Sevastopol Rescue Service, and other emergency responders were reportedly dispatched to the site, where they extinguished the fire.<\/p>\n \n\tThe museum is dedicated to the 1853\u201356 Crimean War, the notoriously brutal conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance that included the Ottoman, French, and British empires. In his statement, Razvozhayev also invoked the World War II\u2013era Siege of Sevastopol, noting that \u201cthe Panorama building was subjected to massed bombing by German aviation.\u201d He added: \u201cThe enemy will pay for this sacrilege!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tUkraine has consistently condemned Russia\u2019s illegal annexation of Crimea, and following the full-scale invasion in 2022, protests have increasingly focused on the peninsula\u2019s role in the looting of Ukrainian cultural property. This same week, staff at Ukraine\u2019s\u00a0Kherson Regional Art Museum alleged that it identified a 1986 painting by artist\u00a0Nina Marchenko that had stolen from their collection in 2022, claiming it had been looted by Russia and is currently housed in Crimea\u2019s\u00a0Central Museum of Tavrida. The painting was spotted in a photo taken during an official visit by \u201cthe occupation administration,\u201d according to a Kherson Art Museum social media\u00a0post.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tAhead of the Russian military\u2019s retreat from Kherson, local cultural workers reported that nearly the entire collection of the Kherson Regional Art Museum had been removed. In 2024, officials at the Kherson Museum as identified 99 of 100 works allegedly looted from its collection by Russian forces thanks to a \u201cpropaganda video\u201d shot in a Crimean museum. The museum estimated that the 100 artworks represent \u201cless than 1 percent\u201d of the cultural objects documented as looted from Ukrainian institutions.<\/p>\n \n\tUkraine has also accused Russia of transforming Tauric Chersonese, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Sevastopol, into a \u201chistorical and archaeological park,\u201d prompting calls for intervention by international bodies.
