The Spurs hit every shot in sight. A 2-2 series heading back to San Antonio felt inevitable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid1\" data-position=\"mid1\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The magic was not actually dead, though. Just dormant. Very dormant, until there were about 10 minutes left in the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The Spurs led this game by 27 points at the half and as many as 29 in the third quarter. <\/b><span>New York chipped away, which wasn\u2019t a surprise, but the lead was still 20 with 9:33 to play. What ensued was a 32-11 run that will be remembered forever in Knicks \u2014 and even NBA \u2014 lore.<br \/>\n<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>Jalen Brunson was, of course, steely down the stretch. In a series John Hollinger thought <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7346902\/2026\/06\/10\/spurs-knicks-game-3-defense-nba-finals\/\"><span>might be<\/span><\/a><span> the best in NBA Finals history before Game 4, <\/span><b>the largest comeback in finals history might seal it.<\/b><span> New York is up 3-1 with a chance to clinch in San Antonio on Saturday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I feel like I just watched \u201cUncut Gems\u201d again after that game, which is fitting, as Adam Sandler was in the building last night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Anyway, there\u2019s some worldwide phenomenon starting today, too:<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3><b>More Big Stuff? Oh yeah, the world\u2019s biggest sporting event<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2026\/06\/03100730\/1202_WC_Nations.png?width=1920&amp;quality=70&amp;format=auto\" width=\"1920\" height=\"960\"><\/p>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s start this preview with a fact\/admission: The World Cup is, at this point, quite overwhelming. Political <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7344372\/2026\/06\/09\/infantino-trump-world-cup-visas\/\"><span>stories<\/span><\/a><span> are still at the forefront. There are 50 percent more teams in this tournament than in previous editions. Where do you even start?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s a mess, in the best way, and it starts today at 3 p.m. ET. Here goes my best attempt at organizing our brains around the on-field action:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bucket 1: The teams<br \/>\n<\/b><span>Yes, there are 48 now, the first time the World Cup has expanded in 28 years. On one hand, we get more games than we\u2019ve ever seen, and we\u2019ll watch some countries compete for the first time. That\u2019s cool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the other hand, it might cheapen the product. That remains to be seen. I asked Chris Sprow, co-author of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/newsletters\/world-cup-briefing\/\"><span>new World Cup newsletter<\/span><\/a><span>, about how to frame this. He had a good answer:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span>\ud83d\udcac \u201cMarch Madness just hit soccer. The expanded field almost guarantees us wildly fun storylines. <\/span><b>Reminder: 32 teams advance from the group stage! <\/b><span>Previously, the idea of Cura\u00e7ao advancing (much less being here) was absurd. Right now, they are at 22 percent to advance in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/interactive\/fifa-mens-world-cup-2026-tracker\/group-knockout-chances-country\/curacao\/\"><span>our model<\/span><\/a><span>. One upset is all it takes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid2\" data-position=\"mid2\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Sold. Then I wonder who we\u2019ll fall in love with, a hallmark of each tournament. Chris picked <\/span><b>Norway<\/b><span>, a team that hasn\u2019t been to the World Cup since 1998 and features some guy named Erling Haaland on the roster. Hannah Vanbiber, also an author on the newsletter, picked <\/span><b>Cura\u00e7ao<\/b><span>, a fun first-timer, and <\/span><b>Japan<\/b><span>. France is the easy pick, having appeared in the last two World Cup finals. I went to Phil Hay, author of our excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/newsletters\/the-athletic-fc\/\">The Athletic FC newsletter<\/a>, for a check on my bias:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"top-league-content-root\"><\/div>\n<p>    {&#8220;endpoint&#8221;:&#8221;https:\/\/api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com\/graphql&#8221;}<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span>\ud83d\udcac \u201cThis could be a tournament of unexpected results, owing to the heat, altitude and fatigue at the end of a long European season. So while France\u2019s attacking resources should do the business,<\/span><b> I\u2019ll stick my neck out and pick a longer shot in Portugal,<\/b><span> provided Roberto Martinez makes the most of their exceptional, Paris Saint-Germain-flavored midfield. The first example that comes to mind is James Rodr\u00edguez, the Colombian who took our collective breath away in 2014.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I went back to Phil for this year\u2019s pick:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span>\ud83d\udcac \u201c<\/span><b>Mexico\u2019s Gilberto Mora<\/b><span> is primed to break out at these finals. He\u2019s 17, and he loves to play. I\u2019m also hoping <\/span><b>Nico Paz<\/b><span> gets game time for Argentina. But look out for Ivory Coast forward <\/span><b>Yan Diomande<\/b><span>. If he comes good, he\u2019ll show why clubs are clamouring to sign him from RB Leipzig.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Three names to watch: \u2705.
