Among them were some of the biggest names in snow sports, displaying the growing influence of skiing and snowboarding beyond the mountains.<\/p>\n<p><b><em>TIME Magazine<\/em> recognized these snow sports athletes for their actions on and off the snow.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Eileen Gu<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Freestyle skier Eileen Gu\u00a0has become one of the most recognizable names in all of sports. <\/strong>A student at Stanford University, a runway model, and a three-time Olympic gold medalist, Gu has helped shape the world of sports, showing that athletes can be more than just athletes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/eileen-gu-lands-both-vogue-and-harpers-bazaar-cover-june-2026\/#google_vignette\">2 Magazine Covers in 1 Week: Eileen Gu Lands Both Vogue China and Harper\u2019s Bazaar China for June<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>At age 15, Gu decided she would represent China in competition (Gu\u2019s mother is from China). <\/strong>The decision was met by polarizing opinions, with many viewing her choice as disloyal. In an<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2023862968212205950\"> interview<\/a> before the 2026 Olympics, United States Vice President J.D. Vance said he had hoped American-born athletes would \u201cwant to compete in the United States.\u201d Gu\u2019s response? \u201cI\u2019m flattered. Thanks, J.D.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gu has been competing for China in the hopes that she can influence women and girls in China to take up winter sports.\u00a0<\/strong>And it is happening. Since 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/increasing-winter-sports-participation\">346 million<\/a> Chinese people have taken part in winter sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gu\u2019s on-snow achievements are remarkable.\u00a0<\/strong>The world\u2019s most decorated freestyle skier, Gu has six total Olympic medals, and is the only action-sports athlete to win three medals apiece at two Olympics. She would end up placing <a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/mikaela-shiffrin-wins-olympic-slalom-gold-ending-8-year-medal-drought\/\">11th<\/a> in giant slalom, and a subpar performance in the team combined left her narrowly missing a medal. It felt like the pressure was too much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But on her last race of the Games, she rose to the occasion. <\/strong>Shiffrin won <a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/mikaela-shiffrin-wins-olympic-slalom-gold-ending-8-year-medal-drought\/\">gold<\/a> in the women\u2019s slalom event by a margin of 1.5 seconds \u2014 the largest margin of victory in any Olympic alpine skiing event since <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nzaccardi\/status\/2024114338240332181\">1998<\/a>. She celebrated the victory with her mother and longtime coach, Eileen. She moved from orphanage to orphanage, where she was physically and emotionally abused. At age 7, Oksana was adopted by an American single mother and moved to the United States. She later had both legs amputated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oksana began adaptive rowing in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131013204818\/http:\/\/www.test.katyacengel.com\/Resources\/Katya_Cengel_Oksana.pdf\">2002<\/a>, later setting world records in the sport. <\/strong>At the 2002 Paralympics in Paris, Oksana won bronze in trunk and arms mixed double sculls, America\u2019s first medal in the event. A back injury would force Oksana to give up rowing. Not one to give up, she turned her attention to new sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oksana would begin training in cross-country skiing and cycling, winning her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/2018\/03\/14\/2018-paralympics-after-setbacks-oksana-masters-wins-gold\/425167002\/\">first Olympic gold<\/a> at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in the cross-country skiing women\u2019s 1.5 km classic sprint race. <\/strong>She won a total of five medals at the 2018 Games; three in cross-country and two in biathlon. Her first cycling Paralympic gold came in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the lead-up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7382752\/paralympics-2026-milano-cortina\/\">2026 Paralympics<\/a>, Masters dealt with hand surgery, a concussion, and a bone infection, but they did not slow her down. <\/strong>Masters won three gold medals in cross country, another gold in biathlon, and a bronze in cross country. Kl\u00e6bo is the only Winter Olympian with double-digit gold medals, with 11 total.
