{"id":1982441,"date":"2026-06-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1982441"},"modified":"2026-06-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T21:00:00","slug":"mad-mikes-building-a-rotary-powered-f1-drift-car-using-a-1986-march-chassis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1982441","title":{"rendered":"Mad Mike&#8217;s building a rotary-powered F1 drift car using a 1986 March chassis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>A gentleman named Michael Whiddett has revealed his intention to install a rotary-powered engine into a 1986 March F1 chassis in a bid to create the world\u2019s first ever Formula One drift machine.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, keen motorsport enthusiasts will say <em>any<\/em> Formula One car can be turned into a drift machine with the right mix of rain and a healthy disregard for tyres, but this one\u2019s different.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>\u201cIt is quite scary actually,\u201d said \u2018Mad Mike\u2019, who you may recognise from previous wild projects we&#8217;ve covered on TG.com. \u201cWe are building by far the most insane project Toni and I have ever tackled.\u201d Toni is Mad Mike Motorsport\u2019s manager.<\/p>\n<p>And together they\u2019ll use a 1986 March 87P Formula One chassis \u2013 originally developed for Formula 3000 and later used in F1 as was the March way back in those days. (Really Keen Motorsport Enthusiasts will fondly remember March Engineering and its journey in F1. Adrian Newey had a successful spell there too.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"HtmlContent\" class=\"MarkUpWrapper-sc-t20i90-0 hQwWlJ\">\n<p>That 87P was originally powered by a Ford Cosworth V8 and in 1987 scored a season-best sixth place at the Monaco GP. Mike intends to bin that Cosworth V8 and install a rotary engine \u2013 because why the hell not \u2013 which, he explains, requires a complete re-engineering of the rear of the car.<\/p>\n<p>Mike\u2019s quite fond of rotary power. He stuck one in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/goodwood-festival-speed-2017\/watch-mad-mike-drift-1200bhp-mx-5-goodwood\">MX-5<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/first-look\/mad-mike-has-finished-building-his-mclaren-p1-drift-car\">McLaren P1<\/a> a while back, too.
