The combination of extreme altitude, exhaustion, and the additional physical demands of the rescue eventually forced him to stop and rest at approximately 7,500 meters (24,600 feet).

According to Thrall, Dawa insisted that the other climbers continue descending without him. “Hillary, are you okay, brother?” Thrall recalled asking. “Yes, yes, fine Chris, please go, go!” Dawa replied. Sherpa guides fix ropes, carry loads, establish camps, and frequently assist climbers in distress, often while exposing themselves to greater risk.

When a wealthy foreign climber goes missing on Everest, helicopters, guides, and expedition companies often mobilize quickly in search of a rescue. When Dawa disappeared, days passed before a major recovery effort took shape. Whether that difference reflects logistics, timing, insurance coverage, or something deeper is likely to be debated long after this climbing season ends. Nevertheless, the mountaineering community needs to examine how it values the lives of the guides who make Everest possible in the first place.

Dama was frostbitten, but overall seemed healthy and happy to be alive.
