{"id":1980223,"date":"2026-06-08T06:18:33","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T03:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1980223"},"modified":"2026-06-08T06:18:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T03:18:33","slug":"matthew-riccitello-knocked-out-of-dauphine-on-day-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/analyse.optim.biz\/?p=1980223","title":{"rendered":"Matthew Riccitello Knocked Out of Dauphin\u00e9 on Day One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[analyse_image type=&#8221;featured&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/GettyImages-2262450698.jpg&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-wrap fp-contentTarget\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"mb-base-loose flex flex-wrap gap-(--spacing-base)\">\n<div class=\"fp-remove flex items-center justify-start gap-(--spacing-base-tight)\"><span class=\"font-utility-2 font-bold text-primary\">Andrew Hood<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pub-date font-utility-2 text-secondary\">Updated June 8, 2026 03:01AM<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Matthew Riccitello was supposed to be one of the last riders with Paul Seixas when the Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes hits the French Alps this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the American climbing ace was heading home from the rebranded Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 before stage 1 had properly clicked into gear.<\/p>\n<p>The Decathlon-CMA CGM rider abandoned early in Sunday\u2019s opening stage in what\u2019s a blow to Seixas just as the French teenager\u2019s biggest race of the season ramps up.<\/p>\n<p>Seixas flagged his teammate\u2019s condition before the start in Vizille.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Riccitello] is a little sick this morning, I think it\u2019s food poisoning or something,\u201d Seixas told <em>CyclingProNet<\/em>. \u201cWe hope he can finish the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That optimism quickly faded, and Decathlon later confirmed the withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeeling sick last night, Matthew Riccitello had to leave the race early,\u201d the team posted. \u201cGet well soon Matthew.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Missing a shot at the French Alps<\/h2>\n<p>This week would have been Riccitello\u2019s first crack at the long, sustained French Alpine climbs since his breakout Tour de l\u2019Avenir in 2023 when he battled Isaac del Toro and finished fourth.<\/p>\n<p>The climbing ace could still rebound in time for the Tour de Suisse (June 17-21), and a spot on Decathlon\u2019s 2026 Tour de France squad isn\u2019t out of the question.<\/p>\n<p>The Arizonan told <em>Velo<\/em> earlier this season that the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a, where he hit a breakout fifth overall last year, was his primary grand tour target.<\/p>\n<p>But Seixas\u2019s surprise Tour de France confirmation changes the calculus for the whole team.<\/p>\n<p>Riccitello has been central to Seixas\u2019s breakout spring, and he raced alongside the French teenager at the Volta ao Algarve, where Seixas took his first pro win, and helped deliver him to victory at the Itzulia Basque Country.<\/p>\n<p>He was also at Decathlon\u2019s recent altitude camp in Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The exit is an unwelcome speed bump for a rider who has otherwise been one of the best American stories of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>After his transfer from Israel-Premier Tech, Riccitello won a stage and the GC at the Tour de Provence, finished ninth at Volta a Catalunya, and took the Tour du Jura in April.<\/p>\n<p>Other Americans this week in France include Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Emirates-XRG), who attacked late Sunday and finished fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) and Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) also line up, while Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) finished in the main GC group Sunday.<\/p>\n<h2>Seixas down a key rider in Tour warmup<\/h2>\n<p>Riccitello\u2019s exit means Seixas is down one rider right out of the gate at the high-pressure, eight-stage Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes.<\/p>\n<p>With Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Poga\u010dar both skipping the race, Seixas enters the race at the center of attention.<\/p>\n<p>With massive hype in the French media, he ended up losing a few seconds in Sunday\u2019s attack-riddled first stage.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 1 offered an early reality check.
