Officers patrolling the race soon brought him to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Azerion-Villa Valkenburg confirmed the police intervention to Dutch cycling outlet <em>Wielerflits<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As previously reported, Van Schip was thrown out of the Ronde de l\u2019Oise on Sunday for riding with a water bottle tucked inside his jersey.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Van Schip received a 300 Swiss franc fine (\u20ac326) for failing to comply with officials\u2019 instructions and wearing non-compliant clothing. That came on top of a 200 Swiss franc fine from two days earlier for a non-compliant riding position.<\/p>\n<p>In his initial Instagram post about the disqualification, Van Schip made no mention of the police intervention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found it very strange,\u201d Van Schip said on social media. \u201cFor a long time, I didn\u2019t get any clarity on exactly what the problem was. I was only told that I was being taken out of the race. Afterwards, I was told that I was being disqualified because I had a water bottle in my jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Schip maintained he had not broken any rules.<\/p>\n<h2>Three and counting<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_988651\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"569\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-988651\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Image-08-06-2026-at-10.26-720x569.png?width=1920&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest heave-ho for the towering Dutchman who has clearly found a way to annoy the UCI race juries.<\/p>\n<p>Disqualifications are rare in professional cycling. Three in under a year is almost unheard of.<\/p>\n<p>Last month he was booted from the Tour of Hellas because he was was resting his forearms on his handlebars, a big no-no on a standard road bike.<\/p>\n<p>Kicked out at last fall\u2019s Tour of the Netherlands, officials ruled his custom seatpost setup non-compliant.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Go back further and the list grows longer, with disqualifications at the Tour of Belgium in 2021 and Heylen Vastgoed Heistse Pijl in 2024, both for ultra-narrow unconventional handlebars.<\/p>\n<p>A self-admitted tech nerd always hunting for a competitive edge, Van Schip has found himself on a perpetual collision course with cycling\u2019s increasingly detailed rulebook.<\/p>\n<p>Van Schip said the confrontation with the <em>commissaire<\/em> Sunday escalated quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe jury rode past immediately and I asked: \u2018Is my cycling position okay now?\u2019 The man completely freaked out,\u201d he recounted. \u201cI asked: \u2018What is the problem? Can I hide the water bottle with you, or do I have to throw it away here?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>More than a rule-breaker<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_988652\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Van Schip\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"555\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-988652 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Image-08-06-2026-at-10.27-720x555.png?width=1920&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><\/figure>\n<p>The 31-year-old Dutch rider has built a cult following online for his remarkable ability to annoy UCI race juries.<\/p>\n<p>The #freeWillem hashtag is quickly making the rounds on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Lost amid the disqualifications is the fact that Van Schip can race.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The 31-year-old from the third-tier Azerion-Villa Valkenburg squad is a two-time world track champion \u2014 the points race in 2019 and the Madison in 2023 \u2014 and has won three pro road races.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, between being kicked out of races, he was runner-up at VDL Omloop der Kempen.<\/p>\n<p>Van Schip has questioned why he passes pre-race bike inspections only to be later disqualified, a punishment typically reserved for dangerous riding or serious rule violations.<\/p>\n<p>His run of red cards comes as the UCI appears to be in a rule-enforcement frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>During the Giro d\u2019Italia, officials handed out waves of sanctions for public urination and warned riders against peeing into water bottles.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the governing body rolled out new limits on bike computers and jersey pockets.
