Chuck D has been a prominent voice in music and popular culture dating back to the 1980s when he first became the lead emcee for legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy.<\/p>\n

But to know Chuck is to know he is also a big sports fan. And like many New York natives, he\u2019s excited about the New York Knicks being in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 \u2014 and being up 2-0 after taking both road games<\/a> against the San Antonio Spurs. Those who follow Chuck on X are familiar with his strong opinions on sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m what they call a fan, but when the pros and ex-players talk, I just sit quietly because there\u2019s a lot of talk by everybody,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s got a podcast, everybody\u2019s got analysis and all that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just watch, and the only thing I bring to the game is I\u2019ve been a fan since the \u201960s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Respectfully, Chuck is more than a fan. He\u2019s a music icon \u2014 a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 2013 \u2014 who tells his sports stories and offers his takes through illustrations.<\/p>\n

While some fans express themselves on social media with words only, Chuck puts together quick drawings of game-related themes to communicate his views. He also uses illustrations to address topics in and out of music. In an attempt to further connect to his fans, rather than signing autographs, Chuck prefers giving \u201csketchographs,\u201d<\/a> custom pieces of art personally designed by him as a gift.<\/p>\n

Lately, his artwork has focused on his beloved Knicks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an illustrator,\u201d Chuck said. \u201cIllustrators are different from painters; I can work big and I do paint well, but what you see are illustrations. I have the speed of an anime cartoonist, and I worked on my speed during the pandemic. Everybody was inside, so the only thing I worked on was the speed. And when you\u2019re an illustrator, you don\u2019t have to work with accuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chuck said an illustration usually takes about five minutes and up to 10 if he wants to make tweaks to the colors.\u00a0Posting to social media has become an efficient way to share his artwork with fans or with people who might not be exposed to it in another form.<\/p>\n

In an illustration posted on May 31, Chuck captured how Knicks fans would be headed to San Antonio in large numbers<\/a>. The day prior, Chuck posted one of Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama and how he would be headed to the terrordome<\/a> of New York\u2019s Madison Square Garden, which is not only a reference to the hostile environment the Knicks hope awaits the Spurs, but also a play on words to one of Public Enemy\u2019s iconic songs, \u201cWelcome to the Terrordome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past, if I was having an exhibition, you\u2019ve got to invite people to a gallery or art show. They ain\u2019t gonna see your work,\u201d Chuck said. \u201cSocial media is, like, everybody is in a forum. It\u2019s easy to take a picture with the phone and then post it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Chuck might defer to former players and coaches when discussing sports, his takes do not read like a novice. They are nuanced and balanced. They take into account perspective. His dedication to following sports dates back to when he was in elementary school.<\/p>\n

In discussing Wembanyama, Chuck\u2019s reference point to the overall impact of the 7-foot-4 phenom is another unique big who turned a team into a contender quickly with a game unlike many had seen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWemby is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar all over again,\u201d Chuck said. \u201cPeople are like, \u2018Oh man, we\u2019ve never seen anything like this.\u2019 That\u2019s evolution, man; this ain\u2019t revolution. \u2026\u00a0It could be like, \u2018He dribbles the ball like Allen Iverson,\u2019 and that\u2019s not what we grew up with, but that\u2019s evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 65 years old, Chuck has been a Knicks fan long enough to recall the heartbreak of losing to the Boston Celtics in the 1969 Eastern Conference finals before watching New York win the title in 1970 and 1973. Before the start of the current series, Chuck predicted the Knicks would beat San Antonio, because five players functioning as a unit can overcome the dominance of Wembanyama.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what old coaches always say? You gotta make the game easy,\u201d Chuck said, regarding a game plan to contain Wembanyama\u2019s impressive game at this stage of his career. \u201cYou gotta make it come to you. When (Wembanyama) gets to the point where he learns and he\u2019s unstoppable, teams are gonna figure out how to neutralize that, because one man can\u2019t beat five.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chuck believes Wembanyama \u2014 whom he is a fan of<\/a> \u2014 will figure out how to dominate in multiple ways. Chuck just doesn\u2019t want that to take place during the finals. Not this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWemby is going to have an unbelievable career if he\u2019s healthy and stays out of the way,\u201d Chuck said. \u201cBut if he is healthy, it depends on how easy the game is for him as opposed to hard. You could get hurt in this modern game real quick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chuck has experienced a lot of hurt as a Knicks fan, so he\u2019s relishing the love the team has received \u2014 even if it\u2019s temporary. He has watched generations of Knicks fans cheer louder during this postseason run. Fan videos after games are popular, and when the Knicks have been on the road, their supporters have had a large in-arena presence.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, we know it\u2019s a one-year honeymoon, because if the Knicks do win, then they\u2019re gonna be hated by everybody next year,\u201d Chuck said. \u201cAnd Knicks fans expect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chuck likened the angst and excitement of Knicks fans to that of Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox fans during their extended championship droughts. If the Knicks win the Larry O\u2019Brien Championship Trophy this year, the journey will be part of what\u2019s made it special. It\u2019s also a given that Chuck will have several illustrations come from it.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s enjoyed how the team has taken a step each season, starting by making the playoffs but losing in the first round in 2021, reaching the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 and 2024, and then falling short in the conference finals last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a buildup, and there\u2019s many generations of Knick fans. All of them think differently,\u201d Chuck said. \u201cYou talk about over half a century, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, Chuck will continue to watch the series, waiting for the next opportunity to illustrate the Knicks as they chase a championship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
